After three years out, in about 26 hours I'm coming HOME. Home is in capital letters. Home is America.
America has a lot of problems. I can't even start to list them. But I'm coming HOME. Again, in capital letters.
Anyways. I'll probably be out of touch for however long the actual flight process is (~24 hours or so).
I hope all of you guys are doing well, and I'll catch you once I'm back connected. Take care, all!

I remember (after my year abroad) coming home, and while I looked forward to it then and ironically now kind of regret coming back, there were benefits which accrued to having had that experience, some of which I continue to enjoy, many years later.

(25,450 posts)I go directly from the airport to a barbecue place for a pulled pork sandwich when I visit. Real Chinese and Vietnamese food is next. Being able to buy huge bags of fruit and eat all you want is amazing (yesterday I paid the equivalent of five dollars for less than a cup of blueberries). A drive-in hamburger, onion rings, and some sort of seasonal milkshake flavor like boysenberry. And so much more...

(53,339 posts)But on one of my month-long trips to Vietnam, I suddenly had a hard time eating. When I returned home I went to the emergency room and it turned out I was severely dehydrated and had to have IV fluids administered.
Weird. I suspect I had a sudden attack of culture shock, but who knows? That never happened on my other two trips.

(25,450 posts)Last weekend I bought lots of Vietnamese rice paper at the import store for my version of refreshing summer rolls: Cilantro, basil, shiso leaves, daikon sprouts, mint, wasabi lettuce or arugula, green onions, and colorful peppers and edible flowers for color. Peanuts are too expensive so I make a sesame sauce for them.

(53,339 posts)Besides pho my faves included the little fried things with shrimp and onions (sounds like bun cawk) and what we got from a cart that came around the neighborhood in the morning. It was soft tofu with a honey sauce for breakfast. I could have eaten it all day.
