I found it scary and horrible and thrilling to listen to the
disembodied boys say that, over and over again.

I remember the Beep Line, only we called it the Jam Line. It was active here in the Twin Cities from the early 1960's to the mid 1980's. There was recently a piece done on our Jam Line on Minnesota Public Radio. Here is a link to the archived story where you can even hear old audio of the Jam Line recorded by a former caller of the thing:
