(70,683 posts)There was an unexpected and FIERCE "straight wind" (instead of tornado whirling, it goes in one direction). It only lasted less than 45 minutes passing through, and the big trees were WHIPPING and WHIPPING incredibly, plus hail, and not me but nearby there was flooding with stranded cars.
While it was very strong at the time, I didn't think the power outage would be out of the ordinary. Well, for me and about ten of my neighbors we were out for, well, those SIXTY hours. My Florida cousins tell me they were out for three weeks from a hurricane, but this was the worst here.
Other conditions of season and kind of storm could be worse, since there was running water to stay showered and hygienic and it was warm so the lack of HOT water wasn't a problem. The key words were ice for the basic perishables and batteries. But I learned that internet, t.v., and reading lamp, my usual pursuits (opinionating and reacting to tiny bits of "news" seem pretty lame.
But I missed my DUers more than anything.
What was different and not different about this storm/crisis.
1) It affected ME directly with the length of the outage more widespread/severe weather events I've been through, well, except for that 2-days terrific storm at sea on my first ship.
2) The media continues to be fairly useless about eye on the ball. I mean, on the morning after, if there were 6,000 without power, youd think they mentioned that. But, no, in the print media the picture of a macho dude with a leaf blower on his rooftop was much more appealing. On the ONE issue of news value, the outage, they had NOTHING for me. The battery radio for the so-called "news and information" radio (wingnut) station had NO status of outages.
3) There was a definite drop in neighborly group support than in previous years. Granted we are all pretty much holed up, without communication. But in previous years during a nighttime outage, we all gathered in the street and renewed communications, temporarily. Not this time. The morning after everybody went about their own pickings up of trees and stuff without trading chatter.
Thanks for the sweetness, and you know who you are.
