The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm confused. What is the difference between rap and hip hop?
Just saw a PBS special on the making of "Hamilton" and was wondering if the two words are sort of the same thing. Help!

(4,138 posts)They are overlapping, but somewhat different musical styles.
I'd say the difference is that hip hop is more about the beat and the overall vibe, with the lyrics being somewhat of an afterthought. Nonsense rhymes, hype lyrics (put your hands in the air!), and such. Party music, basically.
Rap is more introspective, and focused on the lyrics.

(12,013 posts)It seems like both are more about the percussion and the words. Poetry to a drumbeat.
As opposed to music, which has melody and chords.
But I guess my old age is showing.
