sat for a 9 month old bouvier puppy one time and fell in love. He literally insisted on sleeping on the bed with me and he was so big and stubborn I could not get him off though I tried to push him off. So, despite the fact he was not supposed to, he slept on the bed the whole time. He'd also play with other dogs in the dog park and they were all older and smaller. They'd come back to their owners with their heads covered in saliva....I guess he was putting their heads in his mouth for a little fun. At one point he fell into the river as the ice was breaking up. My dad was walking him when it happened and he managed to get back up on solid ground thank god.

(30,947 posts)I have had two of them and they are the best dogs ever. Unfortunately, they went to doggie heaven. I now have a Chihuahua and a Mini-Pin. They are good dogs, but big yappers and bark at anything that moves outside. My Rotties only barked when there was a reason to bark.

(8,692 posts)We had 3 growing up (Fritz, Major and Katrina. My uncle had one of their puppies, Rommel, until I was well in my teens). My current pup is a GSD/Border Collie. But GSDs just don't look healthy anymore. Although, the Hungarian GSD is a beautiful dog. My neighbors had Boxers growing up and my college roomie had a Pitty who was my cat's best friend. Too many wonderful breeds to choose from....

(19,360 posts)I currently live with a Pug, a Boxer/American Pitbull, and two longhaired tuxedo cats. I buy Swiffer refills by the gross.
Do love me some Rottweiler though. Had one from a pup till she passed at 12yrs. Great dog. Kids used to ride her like a pony when they were small, tug on ears, use her for a pillow, she took it all in stride. But let a stranger come to the door, or approach the car if she was riding with us, and she would let them know quick that she meant business. We took her through K-9 training so she was always in control, just extremely protective of the kids and wife.

(11,065 posts)I love everything about them... even their not so good traits. I'm on my third one and don't even consider any other kind of dog. I adore this breed. Though they are perfect for me, they probably aren't a good idea for most people. They are scary smart, terratorial, protective and stubborn as hell.

All the ones I've ever had were sweethearts.
Very protective. Loyal.
Extremely intelligent. I love them for their intelligence, and their excellent sense of humor. They do funny stuff, and I swear they laugh.
If I had to have a very small dog, though, I would have a Pug. They're so ugly they're cute.
PS...I love dogs in general, but I do have my favorite breeds

(11,065 posts)who are their "cousins". They look very similar to the Akita as well except the face is more fox-like rather than bear-like and they're smaller. Just like the Akita, they need a strong alpha owner. I suppose with their smaller size they can get into slightly less destructive mischief than the Akita. LOL!
I never understood why "Inu" is part of the breed name since in Japanese "inu" means "dog". Other Japanese breeds don't have "inu" attached to the name (nobody calls Akitas "Akita Inu" , so I always thought it was odd that the Shiba breed does have the attached "inu" as part of the breed name. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. But as much as it doesn't make sense, I like the name "Shiba Inu" rather than just plain "Shiba". Go figure.
Both the Akita and the Shiba Inu have the same thick double coat that's just marvelously soft and wonderful.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,585 posts)Bet it's the cutest thing in the world.
I think the reason for the name is that "shiba" means "brushwood" (a description of the dog's reddish color), or, in an older dialect, "small." So it makes sense to add "inu" (dog); basically the breed name means "small reddish dog."
I'd love to have one, but they are said to have a strong prey drive so it probably wouldn't get along with my 3 cats.
TorchTheWitch
(11,065 posts)And just be the boss and don't let it mess with the kitties (you have to be the boss with these dogs anyway or they'll run roughshod over you). Cats can pretty well take care of themselves and take out a couple of doggie eyeballs if pooch doesn't watch their step. LOL! If you get one as a pup the kitties will teach it pretty quick not to mess with them.
I don't know if prey drive extends to carnivores even if they are small. My akitas were/are all very prey driven but not with cats or foxes... maybe they know the difference between which critters are hunters and which are the hunted all on their own.
Unfortunately, my current dog is also prey driven to MY food. He knows not to touch it and won't, but he figured out a clever way to cheat (another example of how damn smart these dogs are)... I wear sweatpants or elastic band shorts around the house all the time depending on the weather. I often eat upstairs in front of the computer (yeah, I know!), and he figured out that when following me up the stairs when I have a plate of food in one hand and a glass of something in the other that he can yank my pants down to my ankles so I don't have any choice but to set something down to pull my pants up (you can't walk upstairs with your pants around your ankles!). And once that something has been set down on the ground he figures it's fair game. Sneaky clever stinker!
I figured out how to foil this rotten manuever of his though... the one handed tray! I just have to remember to always use the tray and hang onto my pants with the free hand. I can already see him thinking how to cleverly get around my tray foil though. I swear you can watch them coniving and planning!
One of my neighbors a few streets away has a 12 year old Shiba Inu. When they take her for walks their two cats trot along with them. If one disappears (they like to walk in their own way taking their time and climbing into shrubbery and whatnot), she gets upset and looks all over for the wayward kitty until it shows up. It takes them awhile to get down the street that way. LOL! Her owners say she won't go for her walks without her kitties though. I believe it... both Shiba Inu's and Akitas are so similar including their whacky traits.

(115,585 posts)Maybe when I'm ready to get a dog (after some remodeling is finished) I'll consider a Shiba. Either that, or a rescue mutt. The Shibas are so cute, though.

(13,661 posts)I was young. She was such a wonderful dog.
She wasn't purebred, though, and I'd never purchase a purebred from a breeder; I'd rescue one from a rescue group, though.

We added a Cardigan to our "pack". The female Pembroke can't stand her, but the male has "adopted" her as his companion. They might resemble each other, but personality-wise they are nothing alike! Corgis are endlessly fascinating little critters, aren't they!

(8,217 posts)I've been volunteering at a German Shepherd Rescue and I am definitely partial to that breed.
I can't have a dog at the moment since I don't have time, but if I can get any dog that I want, it would go in this order:
1 - Tibetan Mastiff - Large smart dogs capable of running long distances. Need to make sure you can be their alpha. In Tibet, they are known to hunt Lions. Chances of getting: Slim to none.
[img][/img]
2 - Caucasian Ovarchka/Shepherd - Large smart dogs, a bit harder to deal with than the mastiff, much the same as the first. Chances of getting: Slim to none.
[img][/img]
3 - Siberian Husky - A dog that I could bring through long distances also. Known to be distance runners as well. Chances of getting: Moderate. I'd have to make sure I can spend a month free to at least get a puppy used to me and trained a bit. Otherwise they would be crate trained too much.
4 - German Shepherd - Smart Loyal Dogs. Chances of getting: High. I already volunteer for a rescue, so if I were to adopt a puppy from them it would not be too much of a stretch. They are also an easier breed to train in comparison to a husky.
5 - Shiba - I played with some Shiba puppies before, I particularly like the white coated ones, they look like Bolt! Chances of getting: Moderate, I'd have the same problems like the Husky.
6 - Great Dane - Such friendly, goofy big dogs. Sadly the ones I've dealt with could not last with me when doing a jog, otherwise they are such great dogs. Chances of getting: Moderate I like them, but if I am getting a dog, I want one that would not plop on me mid runs, and a Great Dane is too big to carry.
First two, I doubt I will ever get, so it will have to be 3-5 instead. More likely than not, if I get time, the easiest one for me to have would probably be a German Shepherd.
Corgis are adorable, and I love seeing how fast those short legs go...

(53,410 posts)Poodles are considered one of the smartest dogs and their reputation as a frilly dog is totally unearned. They were bred originally as hunting dogs and they're very good at it. They love water and they're among the longest lived and healthiest of the pure breeds. They're also very hardy and healthy.
But I also love mixed breeds. Mutts rock!

(36,818 posts)Our first two lived to be 17 yrs old each. We have a male and a female now, both are 5 yrs old. The female is very sweet and wants to be around myself or my wife all the time. She is extremely well behaved and can be trained to do most anything. The male lives for chasing a ball or frisbee. He would do it every waking moment if he could. He is scary smart. He has a lot of different words figured out, so my wife and I have to spell things out.
