No, seriously, as much as I support the idea of de-naming schools named in honor of traitors, the trend did get a little carried overboard. There was a moderately successful poet named Sidney Lanier, after whom Houston's prestigious Lanier Middle School was named. I went there, my daughter went there, Walter Cronkite went there, and I even taught there for two years right out of college.

But researchers found out that Lanier served for a year as a private (drafted) in the CSA army. Nevermind that he wasn't famous for fighting in the army, but rather for writing powerful humanistic and lyrical poetry in his later years. Nevermind that the name Lanier Middle School is a well-branded and prestigious calling card for alums--so important that the top contender for renaming was a mediocre mayor named Bob Lanier. Nevermind that Sidney Lanier himself advocated strongly for racial tolerance and healing after the war and spoke out against the Klan in Texas at a time when that took real balls. Nope, he wore the Gray for 12 months and so his name's gotta be purged from the building. What a great lesson for the kids: one mistake in your youth will ruin your name.

I certainly wouldn't let my kid go to any school named after Trump.

'All hope abandon, ye who enter here.'
These words in sombre colour I beheld,
Written upon the summit of a gate.
