(3,600 posts)What makes a song 'White'? This is performed by two Jewish guys. And what, out of curiosity, would be the most 'Black' song ever written?

Here's a whiter version, by Klara Söderberg and Johanna Söderberg.

(3,051 posts)I'm old and tend to be very un-PC, in part because I am tired and in part because I grew up in a era where bigotry was common.
Some is probably refreshing. Some is probably bigotry.
To filter the refreshing from the bigotry, I have a mental trick. I change the race/sex/religion of the statement in mind through a couple of iterations.
If it sounds really bad talking about one race, it's bad for all. If it's funny for all or self-deprecating or some such, I let it past the filter.
Calling a song the "whitest ever" has really bad racist connotations, especially if reverse it (as you did) and say "blackest ever" or "most Asian ever" or whatever.
Ergo, this is something I would not say.
And the joke is really not about race. It's about that certain sweater-vest wearing subset of our population that tends to drive Volvos or Saabs, Could be the Huxtables of TV fame. So figure out what to call the subset and use that term instead of a race.

(58,634 posts)but then, I don't go there on initial impressions anyway. It's why I've always been a bit of an unintentional racist.
It does speak to something I would call a kind of middle class angst, or middle aged depression.
One of many S&G favorites of mine.

(25,220 posts)I can't find the song anywhere. He performed it on SNL. It was hilarious. Parody of Barry White. Song about white privilege.
I only found partial lyrics:
"Baby, I remember the first time I saw you you were down on the beach, entertaining the Van Der Camps. And I was at the tennis camp, looking for a fourth for mixed doubles."
All done in Barry White style with lots of Oooooh baby, Ooooooh baby, babyyyyy

(25,220 posts)I think NBC is real stingy about any YouTubes, so that is why it isn't available.
In Very White, Chevy keeps falling off his piano bench. And lyrics are basically about being white.

It's really funny.
That entire SNL episode is great.
