Hey -- ulcers ran in mother's family, but I guess I got lucky. Nothing worse than a fat liver. But my granddad, who suffered all his life from ulcers, also worked all his life for the same company. Let's call it company B. My uncle, his son, got a job with the same company and promptly developed an ulcer. Quit company B, the ulcer cleared away, no more problems for 40 or so years since. Might work. Good luck, man.

Oh, the pome. I done wrote it back in the 1970's.

Ah, how I used to spend my days
in labor fruitful
and then go home and take my ease
and get a snootful!

But now my stomach's on the blink --
its feeling fretful.
I hardly ever take a drink
and never get full.

I had my cup of bitter bile
(the doctors call it "barium.&quot
and had my X-ray taken -- smile! --
to light up my interium.

Despite me moral turpitude
they found no ulcer there at all.
I feel a proper gratitude,
but one detail remains -- to -- gall:

The doctor said "your liver's fat
as any European goose.
You must cut back! No, more than that!
From now on, you're off the juice."

When now and then I sneak a belt
with movements furtive
I do recall the pains I've felt
in organs hurtive.

And if I ever pull the tap
and get a headfull
my stomache and my conscience zap
me something dreadful!

I was doing that from memory, late at night, and forgot the most important verse!

I had not been a wine drinker, but when I began to drink wine, drank it like I had drunk beer. Didn't work out well. After a few years on the wagon, I went back to the hooch with some strict limits, and that worked OK for me.

Good luck with the ulcer, and do take it seriously -- it can become a nasty problem, I know.

Hope you are able to get some relief from the pain and resume a somewhat normal diet soon.

At least now they know it's a bacterial infection.

When I was in my 40s they just put you on a crappy diet and no booze. Antibiotics really nail it now.

I managed to get rid of one by taking 4 tsp of metamucil morning and evening. In hindsight, what I was doing was providing an environment great for "good" bacteria with the fiber. Eventually they crowded out the bad bacteria and infection.
