The Goethals and Outerbridge both dump you into Brooklyn via Staten Island. Take the Tap! In_The_Wind Dec 2016 #11

Fun fact:. The Outerbridge crossing is named for the first head of the Port Authority, Eugenious Outerbridge.
Quite the moniker.
Have fun in our fair city!

My experience has led me to take either Goethals or Outerbridge to the BQE and back up to 95.

Side point: apparently "Outerbridge" is not named after being the most outer possible bridge from the city, but from an actual person named "Outerbridge". I just learned that today.

As well as many trips up to New England.

(Note, I live not far from I-195 in NJ). I usually do 195-295 (runs parallel to the Turnpike but no tolls) to the Delaware Bridge. After Baltimore, I just do as the GPS tells me. Since you won't have to do 195, in the Trenton vicinity you can pick up 95 and then take route 202 or 206 to 287. You avoid tolls this way.

When going north (as I am tomorrow, family in Westchester, NY) I always take the Tappan Zee as opposed to any of the other crossings. I hate city driving more than I hate Donald Trump and avoid driving anywhere near NYC when possible).

When going north of NY, I take the Tappan Zee to Saw Mill to I-84 east (takes you through CT.) I think to go north you change somewhere around Hartford, but I can't remember the road name.

(Note, consult Google as I'm doing this all off the top of my head).

What I want to know is:

Who the hell was Throg and why did they name bridge after his neck?

The bridge is Throgs Neck--one 'G'--that's for certain. But for fans of history and the way things used to be, Throggs Neck is the name of the community. The name Throggs is originally named after John Throckmorton, who came to the Bronx in 1642 with a party to settle down.Jan 19, 2012

It is named for Major General George Washington Goethals, who supervised the construction of the Panama Canal and was the first construction engineer for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The things you learn!🤔

Bridges/construction/engineers very illuminating, and good way to learn somethings about history.

I wound up doing GW to the Cross Bronx. DC to Boston took 7 and a half hours, which is great

And as soon as I crossed the NY/NJ state line, 287 was backed up. What a day to choose to do construction. Can it not wait two weeks until after the holidays are over?
