Can you buy half loaves of commercial brand rye bread?

Hubby sent me to supermarket today asking for one and I stood in the bread aisle searching for the damn thing until I remembered I did the same thing a while back when he asked for it. It didn't exist then and it doesn't exist now but I often forget that and end up asking the staff for it. They look at me funny, like it's a joke.

This is getting to be a Seinfeld episode in our house. I have to remember that such a thing didn't exist the last time he asked for it and it doesn't exist now either.

Or maybe it once existed but doesn't any more.

Has anyone ever heard of this?

Most markets locally carry a number of varieties including Jewish, Russian, dark, sour dough, and dill.

There, you have your half loaf and a spare for the next time he has a hankering for some.

but I guess it depends on what brands your local store carries.

But when I want a half-loaf - and I almost always do because bread goes stale to me very soon after opening and I'd really rather just make more trips than eat stale bread - I just go to the bakery section where they make better bread anyway in most cases. My Publix bakery is great on bread but I don't like their sheet cakes. If your store doesn't have a bakery...well..that wouldn't be my store lol.

This is only for weirdo bread. I'm the only one in my house that will eat rye, 7 grain Italian wheat, sourdough of all stripes etc...But for plain ol white bread I am newly in love with the Sara Lee Artesan loaf. Thicker, softer slices that never go to waste as we all eat it like it's a competition to get the most bread stuffed down our throats.

and REAL rye. Like the kind so black it sucks all the gravity and light and mass out of the immediate area, like a black hole.

Very good rye, fyi. And smaller loaves (traditional size sold in Europe) vs the big honkin' American-style loaves, which aren't very rye-ish
