is what my youngest son (who is a third year MFA student at Yale School of Drama) said
after we saw Fences --directed by Denzel Washington--with him and his partner yesterday. Fabulous ensemble cast.
Outstanding acting. Really wonderful.
When the credits rolled, August Wilson was identified as having done the screenplay, which surprised me, because I thought
he was dead. And he is. But apparently he wrote the screenplay before he died in 2005.
It comes across very much like a play, but what a story. If you like plays, go see it. It is bound to have several nominations, I think, and I agreed
with my son's assessment "Viola Davis for the win."
Nice website dedicated to preserving information about the work of August Wilson http://www.augustwilson.net/bio/

Denzel Washington and Viola Davis starred in a 2010 revival of Fences on Broadway and they BOTH won Tony's--Best Actor and Best Actress in a Play--that year.

(29,122 posts)which was an autobiographical story; Denzel directed it and had a lead role.
Her emotional but quietly restrained portrayal of a mother meeting her long-ago-abandoned son was a knocked-out-of-the-park moment. Hadn't seen her for years after but it's fabulous that she's getting the public recognition, and roles, her acting deserves.
Check it out if you haven't seen it, this is most of it (it does lose some impact out of context); with Derek Luke.
