Because my puppy just hit me in the nuts, then while on the floor writhing in pain, she punched me in the eye.

(2,560 posts)His favourite trick was to walk close to me then suddenly swing his head into my sensitive parts.
I was always a bit worried about the grandkids. He had a habit of patting you with his paw, which hurt enough when you're older and taller than a four year old. So, my great fear was that he'd "pat" one of the kids in the face. But he never did and always took great care when with the kids.
Not a mean hair on his body. Just big, strong and, at times, over-enthusiastic.
All the best with your puppy. Try and enjoy the pain.

One of them loved to sleep under a grand piano, and took up the whole thing-- a neat surprise for the uninitiated.
Two of them went after a pair of burglars. They didn't kill the bastards, but, shall we say, surgically detained them. Their owner, a retired cop, actually felt a little sorry for the one who will never have kids. Other than that protecting of the homefront, they were indeed gentle giants.
One of them was killed by a raccoon about a year later.

(2,959 posts)We lived in Oakland, Ca, we rarely locked or even closed our back door. This was in the early 70's when people would also let their dogs run wild. The great dane would come in to our family room, get some of our dog's water and a nibble, our dog, a corgi, didn't seem to mind, sniff and lick us. Then she'd hang out for an hour or so. She was really good natured and sweet.
This went on for a couple of years. One day shortly after I moved into my first apartment, I was walking up to my parent's house through a neighborhood about a mile and a half away when that great dane ran up and started licking my face. Her owner ran out of her house and said, "she seems to like you". I told her about the dog's regular visits. The lady loaded the dog and me in her car and drove us the rest of the way to my parent's house so she could meet the family.
The dog's visits continued for a couple of more years. She, and her owner, were always welcome as far as we all were concerned.

Start discipline and training early! They get really hard-headed and obstinate without guidance.
Enjoy!
