I have a lovely niece graduating from high school this year. She is compassionate, progressive minded young woman in a very conservative family. I want to give her something meaningful that she will cherish.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

(2,902 posts)It is very difficult to get our country's permission to travel so getting a passport early helps a lot. I wish I could get permission to travel. I live in Seattle, and Canada isn't that far away.

(31,141 posts)I agree it takes more time than in the past, but everyone in our family has been able to get them without any hassles.
Have you tried the Passport Card?

(2,902 posts)I don't think Obama made things easier since several of my friends were also denied. I live in Seattle, so I would love to visit Vancouver, BC. I live so close to Canada!

(45,481 posts)1. Failure to provide the requested documentation.
2. You have an outstanding warrant, are required to appear in court, are serving time for a felony, or have been convicted of international drug trafficking.
3. You owe more than $5k in back child support.
4. You are not a US Citizen.
As much as I hate to say it, Bush being President had nothing to do with it.
Good to see you, and great you're providing useful info.

It was a sizable amount and she was overwhelmed by my gift. She is a big animal lover so it worked for her!

(1,385 posts)My dad gave me tools before I went to college. I was the only one who had them, so lots of people came to borrow. Great ice breaker. Plus, you can spend as much or as little as you want. Just get good tools, not cheap stuff. A hammer, a few screwdrivers of different types and sizes, a pair of pliers, maybe a toolbox.

(109 posts)I have given money AND a pair of classic pearl earrings to my 4 granddaughters, (have 5 more to go).
I wanted them to look in their jewelry box and have a token of my love.

You could have it engraved with the date or her initials.
