I need HS graduation gift ideas

I have a lovely niece graduating from high school this year. She is compassionate, progressive minded young woman in a very conservative family. I want to give her something meaningful that she will cherish.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is very difficult to get our country's permission to travel so getting a passport early helps a lot. I wish I could get permission to travel. I live in Seattle, and Canada isn't that far away.

I agree it takes more time than in the past, but everyone in our family has been able to get them without any hassles.

Have you tried the Passport Card?

I don't think Obama made things easier since several of my friends were also denied. I live in Seattle, so I would love to visit Vancouver, BC. I live so close to Canada!

I'm not familiar with the Passport Card, but I see it mentioned on the State Dept web site.

1. Failure to provide the requested documentation.
2. You have an outstanding warrant, are required to appear in court, are serving time for a felony, or have been convicted of international drug trafficking.
3. You owe more than $5k in back child support.
4. You are not a US Citizen.

As much as I hate to say it, Bush being President had nothing to do with it.

And it depends what they want to do after HS. My nieces went on to college and we gave them paid subscriptions to research web sites in their particular fields.

Dr. Seuss book, with some cash inside is my go to graduation gift. Something she can keep, something she can spend. I love the message of this book too....

to our local Animal Shelter for her college graduation.

It was a sizable amount and she was overwhelmed by my gift. She is a big animal lover so it worked for her!

My dad gave me tools before I went to college. I was the only one who had them, so lots of people came to borrow. Great ice breaker. Plus, you can spend as much or as little as you want. Just get good tools, not cheap stuff. A hammer, a few screwdrivers of different types and sizes, a pair of pliers, maybe a toolbox.

I read that students with toolboxes become very popular very quickly in college dorms. Everyone needs to borrow something all the time.

I have given money AND a pair of classic pearl earrings to my 4 granddaughters, (have 5 more to go).
I wanted them to look in their jewelry box and have a token of my love.

Many years ago, my best friend gave one to me that I still use all the time. It's elegant, beautiful and useful.

You could have it engraved with the date or her initials.

Many young people only have odds and ends or hand me downs for luggage. A nice, matched set of two or three pieces would be a useful gift.
