A noted famous geneticist has offered, free of charge, to clone any one of your pets for you. It can be any pet you've had at any time provided you have at least one hair of that animal saved. The good news is the animal that is cloned will be identical in every way to the original pet including look and demeanor. The bad news - the cloned pet will only live for 5 years maximum.
Would you do it? Explain your answer

(56,912 posts)Absolutely not! Each of my pets (past and present) are unique in their own way.
I am constantly finding tufts of her fluffy white hair.
She was just a baby here. I lost her when she was 16. I don't think I could deal with losing her twice. I'd only do it if there were no new fur-kids in need of a home.

(19,831 posts)Now, no. I've got a wonderful new dog. He's different but I love him just as much. And it will hurt just as much when he goes. Putting that hurt on a shorter, 5-year cycle won't make anything better.

(30,947 posts)I have a clump of my Rottweiler's hair that the doggie funeral home gave me after I had her cremated. It broke my heart when she died at 12-1/2 years old. I don't know if I could take the grief of losing her clone at only 5 years old.

(17,086 posts)My dog was already fixed when I got her, and a small part of me would have liked the opportunity for pups. The five year lifespan would be a deal breaker, though.

(3,702 posts)My dog Lienie was my baby (my clear favorite) and our dog Ed was my husband's baby (he rescued her 2 years before we met) - we have 2 other dogs who we love dearly but our babies were our first dogs we each bonded with since puppyhood. I have always had dogs as a kid, but Lienie was my first puppy as an adult and Ed was my husband's first dog ever. They died in '09 and '10 and it broke our hearts.
Like a previous poster, I probably would have done it in the days after losing them... but damn the pain of going through that loss... couldn't do it again.
Our two dogs now (who grew up with the other two) are now 11 and 7 yrs old, and we love them so much (and our kitty who is 13 and master of the damn house). Each dog has a unique personality and quirks - that is the fun of watching them grow up and I look forward to seeing what our next pups will be like.

(53,410 posts)I would want a whole new pet and I would give it a good life too.
Cloning doesn't give you 'your' old pet. It just gives you a replica of the body.

(23,336 posts)I couldn't go through that again. In fact, I know I've said it a million times, but the pets I have will be my last. I lost three kitties in just over a year.

I just lost my 15 year-old dog 2 months ago. I don't know when I'll get another dog. She had her own unique smell. I won't find that again and I'd be glad to smell it for 5 more years.
