(23,220 posts)reportedly a five-octave vocal range!
"Ashes Are Burning"--the band doesn't have a lead guitar, but Annie uses her amazing voice to replicate one, and the result is STUNNING! Watch this, and hang onto your jaw--it's gonna drop!

(1,213 posts)I think I stopped breathing a few times!
I definitely like the ethereal, mystical quality.

(23,220 posts)Here is another great one to check out. I first happened to hear it on the radio during a late-night study session in college, and thought, WOW! Who IS this? Unfortunately, I didn't really get to explore this band until several years ago, and have found out what I've been missing for so many years! Depressing, in a way, but happy to get acquainted with them now!
But I never forgot this song in those intervening years! It's a tribute to the great author/humanist/political prisoner and Nobel literature laureate, Aleksandr Solzhenitysn. If you like this, look for the live BBC concert version of it--it's mind-boggling!

(9,265 posts)I thought their music was sappy wallpaper when I was a kid but now I appreciate the beauty of her voice and how she used her voice to give meaning to the lyrics. Taken from us far too young.
FrankfurtCat
(1,213 posts)I didn't like most of their songs when I was younger either. Then a few years back heard a program about the Carpenters on NPR and gained a new respect for their songs, and especially Karen's voice. She has such a unique voice, and conveys emotion so effectively, it sounds like she's caressing the lyrics.

(9,265 posts)Is how young she was when she recorded most of their big hits - she was college age (19 to 23).

(86,569 posts)too many to list all of them but some of my favorites are{
Ella Fitzgerald, Cecelia Bartoli, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Tracy Nelson, Patsy Cline, Sade, Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Merchant... and so many others.
I'm a singer so I have lots of favorites, kind of depends on the day.
FrankfurtCat
(1,213 posts)My Mom sang opera(not her day job), so I grew up hearing a lot of Leontyne Price, Beverly Sills, and Luciano Pavarotti.
2naSalit
(86,569 posts)Cecilia Bartoli, I misspelled it in the other post... She is a mezzo, which is close to my range though I am also known as a contralto, I have a yuuuuge range. Did ten years of classical vocal performance, not my day job, w/symphonies,
I performed some of the music she was recording back then and learned some of her techniques in my voice classes.
Now I sing nearly anything the other musicians can play, bluegrass and blues are big in my area so I go with that, plenty to choose from.
Also adding to the list...
Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Eartha Kitt, Chaka Kahn, Sandy Denny, the lady from It's a Beautiful Day...
FrankfurtCat
(1,213 posts)...but I wasn't sure. Bluegrass is big in my area also-but I don't sing! It must be fun.
I love, love, love Lena Horne. I have a daughter who took her name as her nickname. Her name is Malena, she goes by Lena, and she inherited my mother's musical talent. It skipped a generation

(27,792 posts)She was lead vocalist for the legendary British folk rock band, Fairport Convention, who died at age 31 after a bad fall down some stairs.
Someday, I'd like to read the biography of her called "I've Always Kept a Unicorn"
by Mick Houghton
http://www.mojo4music.com/19696/sandy-denny-was-sacked/
For anyone interested in her, the above link includes a music video of her performing with Fairport Convention.
(From Houghton's biography of Sandy Denny)
(She was) "one of the greatest British singers of her time and the first female British singer-songwriter to produce a substantial and enduring body of original songs."

I sat next to her two days in a row when our groups were playing at the BFBS folk festival in Germany in 1984. She was just great, a wonderful sense of humor (listen to the song).
