Here is another great one to check out. I first happened to hear it on the radio during a late-night study session in college, and thought, WOW! Who IS this? Unfortunately, I didn't really get to explore this band until several years ago, and have found out what I've been missing for so many years! Depressing, in a way, but happy to get acquainted with them now!

But I never forgot this song in those intervening years! It's a tribute to the great author/humanist/political prisoner and Nobel literature laureate, Aleksandr Solzhenitysn. If you like this, look for the live BBC concert version of it--it's mind-boggling!

She has such a unique voice, and conveys emotion so effectively, it sounds like she's caressing the lyrics.

Cecilia Bartoli, I misspelled it in the other post... She is a mezzo, which is close to my range though I am also known as a contralto, I have a yuuuuge range. Did ten years of classical vocal performance, not my day job, w/symphonies,
I performed some of the music she was recording back then and learned some of her techniques in my voice classes.

Now I sing nearly anything the other musicians can play, bluegrass and blues are big in my area so I go with that, plenty to choose from.

Sun Feb 5, 2017, 05:17 PM

She was lead vocalist for the legendary British folk rock band, Fairport Convention, who died at age 31 after a bad fall down some stairs.

Someday, I'd like to read the biography of her called "I've Always Kept a Unicorn"
by Mick Houghton
http://www.mojo4music.com/19696/sandy-denny-was-sacked/

For anyone interested in her, the above link includes a music video of her performing with Fairport Convention.

(From Houghton's biography of Sandy Denny)
(She was) "one of the greatest British singers of her time and the first female British singer-songwriter to produce a substantial and enduring body of original songs."

The women's choir of Bulgarian State Radio:

I saw them perform the second song in person and I nearly wept, and I don't cry for ANY music.

As for western music, it's probably a tie between Bonnie Raitt and Enya.

have been mentioned in this thread, so I'll mention my current favorite, Marié Digby. I discovered her when she appeared at a local club almost two years ago. This is my favorite of her songs.

Maddy Pryor

I sat next to her two days in a row when our groups were playing at the BFBS folk festival in Germany in 1984. She was just great, a wonderful sense of humor (listen to the song). I was with the Holland-America Line and she was with Steeleye Span. While our respective fiddle players were off discussing technique on "Lark In The Morning," Maddy and I were hamming it up with the audience.

and.....

can't forget the haunting voice of Jacqui McShee of Pentagle:

But I also love or at least like almost everyone else mentioned in this thread. Especially Debbie Harry and Chryssie Hynde and Joan Jett. I love those jazz and blues singers of yesteryear as well. Especially Nina Simone. I love Billie Holiday, Sara Vaughn. And Patsy Cline is terrific too.
