I had an ear bug. I played the same song over and over again because

the melody moved me. I never listen to the words. I just did. It is a creepy song no?

Fool if you think it's over

Lyrics
A dying flame, you're free again
Who could love and do that to you
All dressed in black, he won't be coming back
Save your tears, you've got years and years
The pains of seventeen's
Unreal they're only dreams
Save your crying for the day

Fool if you think it's over
'Cos you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the morning sun
You're a fool if you think it's over
It's just begun

Miss teenage dream, such a tragic scene
He knocked your crown and ran away
First wound of pride and how you cried and cried
But save your tears you've got years and years

Fool if you think it's over
'Cos you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the morning sun
You're a fool if you think it's over
It's just begun

I'll buy your first good wine
We'll have a real good time
Save your crying for the day
That may not come but anyone
Who had to pay would laugh at you and say

Fool if you think it's over
'Cos you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why

The song's inspiration was the experience Rea's younger sister Paula had had some years previously of being devastated at losing her first boyfriend,

[Chorus]
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes3

I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens every day

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you

If I look hard enough into the settin' sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin' comes

[Chorus]

Hmm, hmm, hmm...
I want to see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I want to see the sun blotted out from the sky
I want to see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah!

He isn't a stalkerish guy who betrayed her, but friend/relative who is consoling her with his dose of reality, telling her bluntly that it is not end of world because of her first betrayal and life will go on - she has years and years

Re, O.P.'s "the melody moved me. I never listen to the words. I just did. It is a creepy song no?"

I say, a sentiment after mine own heart (the melody/never listen to lyrics). WAaaay, me, too, and similarly I'm sometimes put on the spot when getting around to listening to some lyrics!1

("Goodbye Stranger)/It's got MELODY, REPETITIVE hook - and *COUNTERPOINT*!1 I love COUNTERPOINT!1 - this is FANTASTIC!1:

Supertramp Mark II. L-R: Roger Hodgson, Frank Farrell, Rick Davies, Kevin Currie, and Dave Winthrop

Rick DAVIES

Goodbye Stranger (1979)
by Rick DAVIES/Supertramp

It was an early morning yesterday
I was up before the dawn
And I really have enjoyed my stay
But I must be moving on

->Like a king without a castle
->Like a queen without a throne
->I'm an early morning lover
->And I must be moving on

Now I believe in what you say
Is the undisputed truth
But I have to have things my own way
To keep me in my youth

->Like a ship without an anchor
->Like a slave without a chain
->Just the thought of those sweet ladies
->Sends a shiver through my veins

->And I will go on shining
->Shining like brand new
->I'll never look behind me
->My troubles will be few

CHORUS: (1/once; 2/two & one half times)
1
Goodbye stranger it's been nice
Hope you find your paradise
Tried to see your point of view
Hope your dreams will all come true

2 Goodbye Mary, goodbye Jane
Will we ever meet again
feel no sorrow, feel no shame
Come tomorrow, feel no pain

Now some they do and some they don't
And some you just can't tell
And some they will and some they won't
With some it's just as well

->You can laugh at my behavior
->That'll never bother me
->Say the devil is my savior
->But I don't pay no heed

->And I will go on shining
->Shining like brand new
->I'll never look behind me
->My troubles will be few

CHORUS: (1/once; 2/three & one half times)
Goodbye stranger it's been nice etc...

Supertramp (or their record label) is very serious about keeping their music off of YouTube. The only success I've had finding their songs there are videos of Roger Hodgson in concert.

Usually in those cases the message tells me the "uploader hasn't made the video available in your region," but this time it just read "Video no longer available."

Odd, but that's how it goes.
