Sometimes I get random requests (I'm always suspicious it's a scam) or a friend of a friend wants to add me even though I've never met them in person. I don't bother with those either.

I have a high school buddy that I stay in touch with and he has recommended about 30 alumni, the vast majority of whom I haven't befriended because we were never close in high school. Why would I want to see pics of their kids and their vacations when we were never close to begin with?

I know in RL from FB are my big brother and my big sister. Other than that, it has been just people who sent me friend requests from pages I post on like Oakland A's Fans For Life and Talking Points Memo, with a few Trump-loving "friends" mixed in.

I think it's a sort of juvenile FB contest to have as many friends as possible. I know every one of my FB friends IRL except one. She's the widow of a lifelong friend who recently died and I haven't met her in person.

only one is one I never met in real life and don't remember how or why I accepted her friend request.

There are several who I haven't met in real life BUT I either sought them or they sought me because we interact with each other in other online communities. Some of my oldest FB friends are people I've never met but have been in online groups with since the late 80s. Should they ever wander down this way they would have space in my home if they wanted or needed.

The next biggest group is high school friends. That's where the most strife comes from as they are mostly all still fundamentalist christians (I went to all four years of high school to a private, christian school) while I left religion entirely and I'm not terribly shy about talking about it - especially when they use far right propaganda to bash liberals.

There are 3 High school friends who are no longer practicing christians but they might still believe something - they are, by far, the most pleasant of my old HS friends. One is a Yuan Buddhist and he is incredibly fun and perhaps the man I admire most outside of my dad and grandpa. We were close in high school -so much so that when I first got tired of my stepfathers bullshit and left home at 17 he and his family took me in. He and I then got our first apartment together. I'm grateful that FB closes the 1000+ mile distance between us and I can see him post his daily Buddhist things (which I agree with for the most part) and we can talk whenever we want.

I have a fair amount of FB friends who are in bands I like but I have either corresponded with them privately or actually talked to them in person even if we aren't "hang out at each others' houses" friends.

The rest are various work and/or local friends who haven't given up on me yet. (It's not completely unheard of for me to post profanity-laden tirades on various topics although I have toned that down a bit at the request of my wife who has had to deal with fallout over shit I post. I love her so I try to think first then post but I don't always see the problem until it's pointed out after I posted lol).
