Meet April, a 15-year-old giraffe living at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York. April has already given birth to three calves in the past, and shes about to have her fourth.
April is a bit of a cougar because her baby daddy, Oliver, is only 5 years old and this is his first time being a father and having a baby.
As the birth of Aprils baby neared, the park decided to livestream her pen and capture the calfs entry into the world.

(23,637 posts)How old is April?
We learned that April is 15 years old. In natural habitats, a giraffes' life span is about 15 years. However when in human care that can extend to 20-27 years old. Patch explained that April is in good and strong condition that not only is her life span expected to go well past the 15 years, depending on how she handles her fourth birth, she could possibly be fit enough to have more calves.
How long has April been with Animal Adventure Park?
April has been with Animal Adventure Park since September 2015 and this is her first calf birth at the park. Once her calf is born and she is done nursing it, he or she will move on to another facility as it's rare to keep family members together with fear of incest.
Is April actually in labor?
There's been a lot of speculation of how long April has been in labor and if she's actually contracting. Patch explained that it's not very likely that you will be able to tell April's labor until you see an actual hoof begin to poke out of her rear-end. Giraffe's instinctively hide their labor for however long it's lasting in order to not draw attention from predators who will wait out a giraffe's labor in order to attack once the calf is born.
One sign of active labor is when the giraffe's water breaks. It can be anywhere from a slow trickle of liquid to a flow of mucus.
Then why is the feed up if we're not sure when the calf is coming?
Animal Adventure Park is currently in its off-season so the park is closed to visitors. People who've visited the park in pervious months knew of April's pregnancy and the park has been receiving inquiries about her giving birth. Animal Adventure felt this was a good way to keep those who wanted to follow along with April informed.
Is the calf a boy or girl?
Animal Adventure says their ultrasound equipment cannot tell the sex of the calf.
When is April actually due?
April's tentative due day was mid-February, give or take some days. She is very close but it could still be hours or days.
Why is Oliver kept separate from April?
Male giraffes instinctively care about three things. Mating, fighting and eating. Oliver is only allowed inside with April a little at a time and under close supervision. Otherwise, he could be a danger to April and her calf by either fighting her, attempting to mate with her or eating her food. So he's only allowed to be a supportive father from a distance.
Male giraffes also are not part of the child reading process.

(15,682 posts)I've been watching April. The first time I saw her lay down she actually fell - to her knees and then the rest of the way. I thought she was in trouble.
I'd had a lot of questions that have now been answered! Can't wait for the birth - hoping I don't miss it.

If youve been watching the news or at the very least, checked social media in the last five minutes then you likely know all about the riveting live feed of April the giraffe. This beautiful giraffe, who resides at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, has been pregnant for 15 months.
FIFTEEN MONTHS, PEOPLE. Ill let that sink in for a minute.
Can you imagine being pregnant for 15 months?! If youve ever been an expectant mother who went way passed her due date, chances are, you can probably relate.
April is expected to give birth any minute now and when she does, shell likely be watched by millions of viewers on the zoos official Facebook page, which notes that April is a month overdue and counting.

3/13 Evening Update
Are you on the edge of your seat?
Afternoon and evening keeper and vet checks continue to indicate significant changes in April. Her back end has become significantly larger and relaxed, motion and pulsing in this area has been noted, and discharge has been observed. Ladies and gentlemen - we are close. We are still not confirming active labor, but will state all physical signs are headed in the right direction.
The youtube feed will remain online through the process, Facebook LIVE will also provide updates. A professional crew will be onsite to document the birth also.
Again, be patient, she has fooled us before. We can simply suggest staying tuned into the feed, subscribing to the youtube channel, and also our FB notifications. We will do everything in our power to keep you posted.
Staff will remain onsite this evening to stay with April and also begin mitigating snow levels as they begin to pile early tomorrow morning. Stay safe, stay warm, and bring your animals inside!

3/14 Morning Update
Animal Care is up and at it early today. In addition to animal needs, storm Stella has began to unload on our area and the park will need be made accessible.
Behavior observed at 4/4:30 am EST did warrant a check of condition. Keeper report indicates April remains in the same condition as observed in earlier overnight checks.
The storm has, and will likely, continue to disrupt signal. The cam may go off line and then restart.

3/15 Morning Report
April is doing what she does best, and waiting, and we are thankful!
April and Oliver are doing well in their heated barn, while 2-3' of snow encapsulate the property. All other stock is sheltered in place and comfortable.
April's condition remains the same as days prior, for which we are thankful.
The live cam will experience issues throughout the day with signal, however the most current like link can always be found at www.ApriltheGiraffe.com
During this busy time, updates will be kept short and nonessential emails and inquiries will be addressed when appropriate.

3/14 Evening Update
We remain in a holding pattern. No significant change from this morning or last night, though all signs are still present - suggesting we are at the end of the pregnancy. Slight discharge, swelling, pulsing, etc. Keepers reported that baby is very active this evening. April remains in STELLAr (did you get that snowstorm joke) condition.
We remain under the attack of Snowstorm Stella. All animals are safe and comfortable, keepers remain on site this evening to continue to ensure proper conditions.
Procedures are in place to get the necessary individuals to the site should April begin to birth.
To our local friends; stay safe, stay warm, and rest up for the dig out!

3/18. Morning Update
Keepers report continued giraffe calf cartwheels inside mom's belly! Appetite is strong, but notice minimal "hay showers" this morning. Perhaps her mind is elsewhere.
Belly has noticeably dropped further, keepers report almost a ...get ready for it... egg shape to her now.
Any of you watching this early morning witnessed some beautiful moments between mom and her belly. As it shows in photo, April napped with her extended back head onto her belly.
Giraffe Factoid:
Giraffes have long thought to have been silent; however it was recently proven giraffes will hum to one another, outside of human hearing capacity range. Is April "talking" to her baby?

3/19 Morning Update
Keepers have noted a calming down of the calf and April carrying everything a bit towards the rear. This is exactly what we want! Wax caps are still in place. Appetite remains strong.
I didn't know what wax caps were and found this article below. Good article with interesting pictures and answers the question......What are wax caps?
April the giraffe: Why everyone is talking about her teats and how the baby is IMMINENT
One of the major changes that a female giraffe displays in the later stages of pregnancy is developing wax caps on her four teat, preventing vital milk rich in antibodies to protect the newborn calf from infections leaking.

"Holy Smokes"
Keeper report is "holy smokes" baby is sticking out. It is very evident in visual observations that the calf is moving up and sticking out! All are happy with progress, we are not in labor at this time.
Temperatures are warming and snow is melting. We hope to have the giraffes outside soon! Excitingly - a new batch of enrichment items should be arriving tomorrow and will be installed for viewer enjoyment!
Hope all had a great weekend and we look forward to another week and hopefully the arrival of our long awaited calf.

Good Morning Everyone and Happy Spring!
Keeper report is that belly/baby continue to stay towards the back end.
Observation over night peaked our interest a few times, but nothing to report just yet. April is eating but not as ravenous as days prior.

3/21 Morning Update
Not much to note is changes over night, however, we encourage you to compare today's belly size to even a week ago, to see just how far we have come! We would like to think we are in the home stretch - but of course keep our opinions and thoughts to ourselves (as we have been wrong before).
This morning around 10 am - we will be moving enrichment items into camera view for our guests to see some of the activity that keeps our giraffes' interest. We replaced older items thank to your contributions! Boat Buoys and bumpers are not inexpensive!
Anytime we change or alter something in their giraffes' space - you will see their curiosity come to life. With this curious trait, we bring forward our caution. Giraffes can and do get themselves into trouble with eir curious nature which can prove fatal. We will watch these new enrichment items the next few days to ensure they are in fact "Giraffe Proof".
Giraffe Factoid of the Day:
Giraffes can go longer without a drink than camels!
They get most of their water from their plant-based dietwhich is good considering their height makes the process of drinking difficult and makes them vulnerable!

A Quick One!
Giraffe puzzle feeders return at 9:30 am for your viewing pleasure - lets see how long they last!
Keepers report April is very moody and off from her normal self -- this is a good thing. Back end continues to progress to our satisfaction.
We hope by the weekend or early next week the giraffes will return outside. Enrichment is used to stimulate the animals' body and mind! Enrichment for our giraffes is increased during longer indoor stays.

3/22 Evening Update
We are a hair behind with this update because we wanted to share with you a photo of new life!
Upon Allysa's walk back to night quarters, from the giraffe barn, she came across "fatty patty" one of our pygmy goats - that just had twins! So mom and kids have been moved into the nursery barn, along side our llama and cria, to relax and bond! Why is it always the coldest night?
April continues to be herself - though a bit moody end of day but the vet reported a happy girl earlier this afternoon. As you can see from the cam, her back end is huge, tail is up, aaaannnddd we wait!
Today brought many developments!
We are so excited to announce some amazing partnerships! As you can see, Toys R Us, has joined forces and done some amazing this for conservation. Stay tuned tomorrow for potentially life changing news for wild giraffes!

3/23 Morning Update
April was notably slower moving this morning at breakfast. Wax caps are still present and her back end swell (as you can see) continues to be significant. Belly growth from last week to this week is still mind blowing - she has to fit a 6', 150# calf somewhere!
The twin goats born late last night are doing great and have been confirmed 1 boy and 1 girl.
We're excited to announce that weve team up with Toys R Us!
Both Animal Adventure Park and Toys 'R Us have the common goal of bringing awareness to the plight of the giraffe as well as the need to create a sustainable future for them. Made possible in part by their sponsorship, Animal Adventure Park will be donating $25,000 to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF)!
GCF is the only non-governmental organization in the world that concentrates only on the conservation and management of giraffe, in the wild, in Africa we are thrilled to be able to support such a worthy cause!
GCF founders Stephanie & Julian send their love, thanks, and support all the way from Namibia! We look forward to a long relationship, and just the beginning of our support to their foundation and giraffes!

3/27 Morning Update
April had us watching the monitors close last night. Her behavior was interesting last night, and is noted as continued this morning. She is very relaxed, tail has been raising on and off for periods of time. Wax caps are in place but we have noted a significant mammary change! Photo is comments section! We are getting there!
Any changes will be posted throughout the day.
Today, we share with you the video link to a highly demanded, up close (but quick) video of April and Allysa. Their bond is evident - a true trusting relationship.
Giraffe Factoid:
The hoof of a giraffe is about 12" or the size of your dinner plate! Think about that at your next meal!! In the wild, hooves are naturally maintained by the hard and coarse ground surface. In captive management programs, we mimic that natural substrate for hoof care - often why you will not see green grass (North American grass) in giraffe yards. Their entry and exit from their barn also has a specific material, and the barn floors are finished to promote hoof trimming. If the hoof is not able to be naturally trimmed, giraffes can and will train to stand for the largest manicure you have ever seen!

So like most things there's 2 sides to everything.
I did not know about the giraffe killed in Copenhagen in 2014. I read up on it after reading your note. It saddens me to know they did this based on what they felt was best for the continuance of the species. There is of course a debate on whether it was the right thing to do.
I'll be the first to condemn this animal park if there is any hint of maltreatment or suffering of their animals. My understanding is the baby will be sent to another facility once it has been weaned from April. But I have become interested with April's progress. It is a bright spot in an otherwise disturbed world, so I'll see it through to her baby's birth.
Peace.

4/2 Evening Update - a long one
Keepers continue to report the same physical and behavioral observations. The giraffes did enjoy some outside time today, though April chose to enjoy the sunshine and air from her doorway.
Tonight we share some answers and feedback from the vet on questions he receives in public forums.
"Faking out Dr. Tim"
So the timeline for my 24-48 hour prediction is rapidly coming to an end... not surprising is the fact that we still have no calf and we still don't have a giraffe in Labor! Pretty much all of her clinical signs from a couple days ago are still true. She just isn't quite ready to give the world what it wants.
To answer a few question I have seen on the web in various places: no, she isn't late; no, she isn't overdue; no, I'm not concerned she is "taking so long", nor should you be. Yes she remains happy and comfortable (considering the circumstances). Yes, she will have this calf when she is good and ready. No, public outcry won't change that. No, I cannot induce her, nor should we want to... (those are human constructs which don't apply to large wild animals and only endanger the life of April and her calf )Yes, it will be awesome when the calf arrives. No, watching after April is not my only job. Yes, we have been watching her for a very long time... enjoy the <free> show people. Get more popcorn.
You all know how much I love to be wrong about my predictions, but such is life. I'll keep all posted and will let you know when the baby is on its way. It really shouldn't be much longer, I'm just not going to tell you my guesstimate anymore.

Giraffe Factoid:
Giraffe hooves grow much like your finger nails and must be maintained. Many parks, along with ours, uses natural substrates and materials to allow natural trimming, as they would encounter in a wild environment. However, some times, they still need extra attention. Giraffes can be target trained to stand at a location and present their hooves for keepers to provide one of the largest pedicures known to man! Keep in mind, this training takes time and patience, and we can't forget the power and strength behind a giraffe kick.

Early morning observations indicate no significant changes in physical appearance. As stated in posts prior - we do not expect any further physical change. We are waiting for increased pacing to indicate an active labor situation has begun, in addition to pushing/contractions. So, be watchful of behavioral changes!
Giraffes will have a beautiful day in the yard with 70 Degree temperatures on the horizon! We will capture some great shots of Oliver and April outdoors, along with staff and share those with you late day today thru the text subscription service.
If you haven't yet, it is easy to subscribe and you haven't missed content - you will be able to view prior shared photos! We believe we may have VIDEO content available to text subscribers also! www.Aprilthegiraffealert.com
Giraffe Factoid: There has been Giraffe (Zarafa) Hysteria Before
In 1827 the first giraffe ever seen in France, became an instant celebrity in Paris. Michael Allin in Zarafa chronicles her impact on the French:
"Zarafamania gripped Paris and crowds rioted around her as she was paraded through the city and presented to the king. Women imitated her with their hair styles high, a la Girafe, and the men wore fashionably giraffique hats and ties. In the magazine of the day there were instructions for tying a gentleman's cravat a la Girafe."

(115,661 posts)and seeing people in there, I realized how really, really big giraffes are. The tops of the humans' heads only reach to the openings in the pen (and to April's butt). April and her baby daddy seem really docile - a good thing because they could do a lot of damage.
Still no baby...

4/12 Morning Update
All is well in the Giraffe Barn - doors are open and yard time has already begun! Physical body condition remains the same, comfort level has not changed, behavior is on point.
Today's photo is of the udder, to show mammary development.
For any hoaxers or #Fakenews stories questioning April and the pregnancy - a quick biology lesson - animals do not develop milk unless supporting a pregnancy. Furthermore - giraffes do not develop large udders like cattle etc, so to see this much development truly suggests calving in the near future.
Patience is a virtue! Remember, the Giraffe Cam was not set-up to capture an immediate birth - it was set-up to capture a process. Mind you, we did expect a calf sooner than this - but that is all part of the journey!

Giraffe Factoid: Giraffe Milk -Does a Body Good
A baby giraffe's body! There was chatter at the beginning of the year about giraffe milk as a Super Food. We don't know about that but what we can cite is; a study in 1962 (yes it's old) showed that many vitamin levels in giraffes milk were the same as those in cows milk, but the levels of vitamin A, vitamin B12 and nicotinic acid were all higher in giraffe milk. Meanwhile, giraffe milk is much higher in fat than cows milk 12.5 percent compared to 3.5 percent. All that fat might sound like a turnoff, but recent research has shown that higher levels of dairy fat can also lead to a lower risk of diabetes.

Watching her this morning it did look like she was less calm than when I've checked in on her before. And no, I don't watch her all day. I will check on her maybe 3-4 times a day. I never thought when I started this thread I would still be reporting on her 2 months later. But at this point I need to see it through. I'm traveling over the weekend, so I just know she'll decide to drop the calf just when I'm out of contact.
I know others are interested as well as the thread has 14508 views. So we'll continue to travel on this trip with April hopefully reaching our destination very soon.

4/13. Morning Update
She is "out of it" were keepers comments this morning; noting distracted behavior versus her normal inquisitive, treat begging, self. Significant bulging of the belly also noted.
Backend slightly damp but nothing to get excited about yet. We are still observing light discharge on a daily basis.
Cool morning temperatures will delay yard time, but this afternoon we expect to do a Q&A session from the giraffe deck with Oliver.
We haven't done a Q&A in a bit of time.
So, please submit questions you may have in the comments of this post and we will address some of them!
We welcomed a muntjac deer fawn yesterday! This tiny little critter is by far one of the cutest offspring we've observed. Pictures will post once mom and baby settle in.

Giraffe Factoid: the Buffet line starts here
Giraffes have been described as browsers. Unlike grazing (grass-eating) herbivores, which consume relatively uniform feeds, wild giraffe choose their diet from an assortment of foods that are very different in nutritive content. In captive management programs, fresh browse, quality hay, and Mazuri Wild Herbivore pellet diet, hits all of the nutritional needs of Giraffes to ensure a comfortable and increased longevity.
