Okay, so he's surely not eating as much day to day as he does in front of the camera for tapings of his show. But, my god, for a guy who earns his living off of his own cooking and sampling the cuisine of others (including some very rich offerings), he must workout like a madman!

(40,209 posts)It's his metabolism. He wrote that he has always been "long and sinewy." Just lucky genes.

(9,352 posts)Just read an article about him in the New Yorker. He has lost 35 pounds in the last 1-2 years training like crazy. He tries to find a dojo wherever he travels.
He has a blue belt. Not sure what level that is, but that's what was reported.

(17,303 posts)but I didn't know how often. Interesting. Thanks.
BTW, the belt system goes from white (novice) to blue, to purple, to brown to black.
I didn't know where blue fit in.

I remember a show where he was biking somewhere, got out of breath, and stopped for a cigarette. My brother and and I both laughed out loud.
Hi, this is my first post of my own.
In response to your question: he quit smoking when his daughter was born. On the other hand nicotine is a nervous-system stimulant and can indeed cause not only the airways, but also the oxy receptors in the lungs to open further. While I'd never recommend it, a well-timed cigarette can advert an asthmatic episode.

(53,031 posts)It's good he quit. I've always wondered about chefs who smoke. It has to be bad for the palate.

(17,303 posts)He seems pretty well grounded from the clips I've seen of him.

(9,352 posts)Probably makes him a prick often but he can also be a sweetheart.
Must be difficult to live with.
The article I read related that he did a shitload of drugs when he was younger.

(1,756 posts)It kicks the metabolism into high gear.....that's where the " munchies " comes from. He's never boasted about being a "pot-head," but he has hinted at it over the years, and I do remember him partaking on at least one episode of "No Reservations." He has put the bulk of his alcoholism behind him, and he has given up cigarettes. Marijuana has been well documented to be a much healthier alternative to either, and especially both.
I'm sure it helps the many miles he's hiked in the wilderness between meals in every episode.....
