Netflix Will Distribute Tohos 2017 Godzilla Anime Movie
The Godzilla franchise is on a roll as work on an anime movie set for release this year continues for a planned release sometime this year. Today, it was announced that Netflix would be distributing the film following its release in Japan.
Comic Book Resources is reporting that Netflix has exclusively snagged the distribution rights to the currently-untitled Godzilla anime film that will be released later this year. Godzilla represents another of Netflixs anime-related acquisitions, as the service has moved toward expanding its amount of original and exclusive content. This iteration of the King of the Monsters will not be related to the MonsterVerse that Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures are working on together, nor will it be tied to last years Toho-produced Shin Godzilla it will be a part of its own continuity.
Although no plot details have been revealed, the concept art released suggests that the movie will involve a group of off-world colonists encountering the kaiju on an alien world. More information will be made available at the AnimeJapan 2017 convention on March 26. The film is be co-directed by Kōbun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita, is written by Gen Urobuchi, and features a cast that includes Yuuki Kaji, Takahiro Sakurai, Mamoru Miyano, Junichi Suwabe, Kana Hanazawa, and Tomokazu Sugita.
