Then: I love Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead. The most melodic of bassists. He is still out there playing with everyone. Some of his projects post Jerry were truly incredible with surprising band configurations and players (Ryan Adams, Joan Osborne, Jackie Greene among others.
Now: Les Claypool. Guy is amazing. Plays with Primus as his primary but also plays with many others including an acoustic show.

I was an 80's kid, and GenX was very anti-Boomer music, so I was never really exposed to the Beatles.
I've come to admire them, and Paul did some really interesting bass work in the later Beatles era.
