Badass shingles update.

I am so touched by everyone's kindness and concern about this godawful virus. And I'm happy to say I'm up to "Hey! I've been upright for hours!" stage. I can even eat. I'm hoping I can get out of the house without feeling I've done a full on marathon. You still couldn't trust me to drive or even walk without some risk.

But they switched me off that bloody oxy onto gabapentin. I can't imagine how someone who isn't in dire need of it gets addicted. It is NOT pleasant. At any rate, I am slowly losing pain and regaining a working brain.

Once again, you all are family. I love the stuffing out of you.

Once I've been on it a couple of days, I can't wait to get that stuff out of my head, something in common with most of my patients taking it. We just want our brains to work right again, even after the gnarliest surgeries or (in my case) fractures.

If you find that neurontin isn't doing the whole job, ask about Ultram. It's a weak SSRI that seems to hit the opiate receptors and reduce pain without the buzz that gets in the way of being able to brain.

And I hope the SOBs are gone soon.

Nothing is as bad as nerve pain, and that is mostly what shingles pain is.

After the blisters are gone, and you are healing, if you get post-shingle nerve pain, what worked so very well for me is amitryptiline, the generic name for an old anti-depressant named Elavil.
Super cheap, and in low dose of 50 mg has been used for a long time as pain relief for nerve pain.
In fact, Mr. Dixie is still having a hellacious time with his smashed discs in his back,
and the first night he took one of those pills, he slept all night with no waking up pain, first time in a year.
but the med has no hangover etc side effects. I am forever grateful to my doc for thinking of it.

When I had the shingles a few years ago, I had good results with using Apple cider vinegar / cool water compresses on the lesions. It sped up the healing process. Felt pretty good too. I slept with an ice pack on my neck for several weeks. I had the insane itching, not the insane pain.
Hang in there...

But the best remedy for shingles or cold sores is hot water. Take a shower start with running warm water on affected area gradually increasing to hotter water. At first will tngle then go numb, go as hot as can without burning self but keep on for a minute or two on hot. The pain will completely disappear for 6 hours or longer then repeat. You will notice immediate relief and healing. Believe it, it works, no need for any med.s.

I'm not very itchy now, but it is a good natural relief.

It was pretty classic, half my chest and back. Out of it for a week, painful and ugly for a few weeks. I still have scars from it.

Hope you get better soon!
