Vaping....I used to be a heavy smoker. I've mainly been a non-smoker for 30 years...

(My main question is below in all caps if folks don't want to read all of this-I'd really appreciate what you know regarding my question). Anyway, I've had a few relapses but the last one I had (about 5 years ago) I was able to easily quit because Chantix really, really completely worked for me; I actually lean more towards being a health nut. Anyway, I went to a reunion of sorts with life long friends a couple of months ago and one of them is trying to quit smoking so she was vaping. I tried it and really liked it (but not the tobacco part, more for the sensation). Anyway when I got home I bought the vaping device and the ejuice (with 0% tobacco). I really, really enjoy it. It helps me with my oral fixation and also helps me regarding overeating as I'm trying to loose weight. Anyway, the main reason I'm posting is because the ejuice that I ordered online came in today and my roommate brought it in to me (Side note - I have a roommate because I want to live in the awesome beach city of Redondo Beach, CA and wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise). This roommate can be really difficult sometimes (a complete B BUT most of the time she's okay). I love everything about my apt. and don't want to move unless absolutely necessary. Anyway, she said, "Are you vaping?!?!?! I said I'd tried it and mentioned my experience with my friend at my reunion. She became furious and said you will NOT VAPE here and started giving me the 3rd degree (She's a TOTAL control freak and I try to overlook it). I'm almost 60 years old, I completely pay my 1/2 of everything, have NEVER, I repeat NEVER been late on ANY bills, etc. The reason she has control is because the lease is in her name as I moved in while she was already here (I found her through a service). I've lived here for about 3 1/2 years. I've been around her more lately because I'm in the kitchen more because of my diet. Also, neither of us works right now as she's retired and the company in which I worked went out of business. So, the more I'm around her, the worse it its. After all of this, my question is:

DOES VAPING IN AN ENCLOSED ENVIORNMENT (INDOORS VERSUS OUTDOORS) HAVE ANY EFFECT ON OTHERS?

(The really FUNNY thing is I've been vaping in my room/office for two months and she's never noticed a thing)! LOL!

If you're in an airtight space shuttle (impossible now that they're decomissioned), probably.

However, what most people object to indoors is the flavoring you use. It's really unpleasant to be smelling powerful cherry or mint juice when you're trying to eat shrimp scampi in a restaurant, for instance. Maybe unflavoted juice or diluted juice would be better indoors if your partner objects. Otherwise, it's just steam since you're not using nicotine.

As for vaping versus smoking, I can't say vaping is 100% safe because it most likely isn't. However, anything is better than sucking concentrated smoke into your lungs.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Maybe your roomie doesn't really understand that there's no nicotine involved? I've been vaping now for a few years and am down to zero nicotine, but I still find it enjoyable and relaxing.

Have you considered making your own e-juice? It's pennies on the dollar compared to what you buy in shops or on line. There are only two ingredients in my e-juice: organic vegetable glycerine and organic flavoring. You also get a better cloud (which is half the fun) without proropylene glycol. You can invent your own flavor combinations, too, and that's fun.

All you need in the way of equipment is a couple of measuring syringes with blunt-tip needles. Recipe calculators are available on line so you get the right proportions for the quantity you want to make.

My e-juice prices out at $1.50/oz with premium organic ingredients - a whole hell of a lot safer than "mystery" flavors from who-knows-where in commercial preparations and a whole hell of a lot cheaper. I'd be happy to give you my sources, if you're interested in making your own.

On edit: Glycerine is a humectant and a major ingredient in mucus-loosening medications and inhalants. There is absolutely nothing harmful about it.

12. Here you go.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]This is also for anyone else who vapes and would like to try making their own pure, organic (if you want), and much cheaper e-juice than can be bought prepared.

Equipment
1. A storage bottle with appropriate tip for refilling your tank.
2. A 10 to 20-mL measuring syringe with blunt-tip needle.
3. A 3 to 5-mL measuring syringe with blunt-tip needle.

Ingredients
1. Organic vegetable glycerine (VG). This can be found on line from a number of sources, but I use Mountain Rose Herbs (www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/vegetable-glycerine/profile). If you're satisfied with using less expensive USP grade but not organic, it's readily available on line and in many drugstores.

2. Organic flavorings. The best I've tried come from Natures Flavors in Orange, California. Use the organic coffee and tea variety. These are the ones appropriate for making e-juice because they're already blended with organic cane alcohol and organic glycerine, completely soluble with no solid residue, and designed to be aerosolized.

A perennial favorite for me personally and the handful of friends for whom I also make e-juice is the Irish Cream. However, we've all branched out and found other favorites, too. Here's the right page to start with: www.naturesflavors.com/74-organic-coffee-and-tea-flavoring. You can mix different flavors to come up with your own specialty. Experiment!

Optional ingredients.
1. Propylene glycol (PG). This is readily available, but not in an "organic" version. It's one of the ingredients besides nicotine that gives the sought-after (by some) "throat hit." It is mixed in varying proportions with VG according to personal preference. I find it unpleasant and completely unnecessary.

2. Liquid nicotine. Nicotine cannot legally be called "organic" because it is, all by itself, an insecticide. However, when I was using it, I bought it from Wizard Labs in Florida because their product is distilled from "organically grown" tobacco plants by a lab that supplies medical-grade nicotine for patches, lozenges, etc.

I would buy the 100 mg/L version, which is quite toxic at that strength. It was shipped with nitrile gloves and lots of precautionary warnings about how to handle it, and I never had any problems. wizardlabs.us/index.php?route=product/category&path=60_65

Keep in mind that a regular cigarette is 18 mg/L in strength. For smokers who want to quit, start with that and gradually reduce the amount of nicotine in your e-juice. If you're already smoking lights, start with 9 mg/L. This is a cheap, easy, and quite pleasant way to get off cigarettes.

Wizard Labs is also a very good place to buy your measuring syringes and blunt-tip needles. You can rinse and reuse these over and over for quite a while before they need to be replaced. We're making e-juice here, not injectables, so clean is important but sterility is not an issue.
https://wizardlabs.us/index.php?route=product/category&path=73

They also have bottles in varying types and sizes appropriate to store and dispense your e-juice.

Recipe Calculators
My favorite is this one: http://www.todmuller.com/ejuice/ejuice.php. It's simple, straightforward, and accurate. I use 22% flavor in my mixes and the rest VG. Vary according to your own preference.

Another pretty good one is https://ecigvape.com/simple-e-liquid-calculator.

That's it! No artificial flavors from China or wherever containing god-knows-what, and no mystery ingredients. It's simple, inexpensive, and fun.

Enjoy!

On edit: As for reactions from those who come into my apartment, they'll often comment to the effect of "What's that nice smell?" No one has ever objected, even if initially concerned, once I explained that there's no nicotine content.

.5 of it burns before it reaches you so typically about 1.5 or perhaps I'm not familiar with 18/L or 9/L . With that I'm thinking 8 cigarettes or 4.5 cigarettes.

Whenever I use e-cigs I just buy from the smoke shop so I have little idea what the additional ingredients are but whatever it is it causes acid reflux. I used to buy from MadVapes online and they had good flavors. Don't know if they're still around. Thanks for the advice, I just had a question.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]The nicotine content of a cigarette would, of course, be quite different from the amount of nicotine that actually gets into your bloodstream. There are also different ways of measuring it, i.e. percentage of content versus mg or mcg of content.

Every source I've used for e-juice goes by mg/L of liquid and commercially prepared e-juice also uses that measure.

As for your acid reflux, most commercially prepared e-cigs and e-juice contain at least some amount of propylene glycol, which causes adverse reactions for a lot of people, including allergic reactions.

If you like e-cigs, give some thought to trying the refillable-tank kind and making your own juice. No mystery ingredients was my initial motivation, but there are plenty of other benefits, including it being less expensive and giving opportunities for a wider range of flavors, including any custom mix you come up with.

After two years, I finally settled on a Joyetech eVIC VTC Mini and a Cubis "shotglass" tank, and I love the setup. It's a bit of an initial outlay, but after that you only need to replace the atomizer head now and then, and the rechargeable battery every few months.

I don't smoke cigarettes and even a whiff of it at a bus stop or 25 ft away is suffocating and pick it up right away. I prefer lozenges or gum but with e-cig there is too much build up of inhaled vapor ingredients but the nicotine gum builds up too which is why I like lozenges. There is a huge difference though from tobacco smoke. I get dizzy just from a few puffs of a regular cigarette but as to the harm of e-cigs there aren't long-term studies like there are like cigarettes to know the long term or second hand effects and side effects. Just use your best judgment.

There's lots of nonsense propaganda out there that might help to brainwash people into being scared of vaping.
All they are smelling is the scent of that food flavoring though.

My husband and I both have been vaping since 2009, it helped us quit smoking, and we just like the flavors, the relaxation, etc.

Compared so sucking in big lung-bucketfuls of burning chemicals and garbage, it's relatively harmless. Especially if you are not even vaping with any nicotine- which would only be affecting you, not anyone else in the room.

21. I have been vaping
Mon Apr 17, 2017, 12:43 PM

for about 3 and a half years and so far its been working for me. I was a smoker for roughly 17 yrs or so, and I was a half a pack a day smoker. I still smoke very rarely, for example last year I smoked 3 cigarettes.

As for vaping indoors I've noticed a few weird things. I'm on a fluid that tastes like real cigarettes, its called Gun Runner and I haven't seen or found that smoking indoors with this juice causes any harm, or build up of film on anything. On the other hand a friend of mine who vapes very heavily on a jester juice variation was smoking indoors in my spare bedroom for 5 months. After he moved out I noticed a heavy, syrup like substance on everything. I had a fan in the room and it wasn't working so I opened it up to see if there was debris causing issue and what I found was interesting. The inside of the fan was filled with syrup, like someone grabbed a bottle of syrup and just dumped it in the fan.

The walls, floor, shit everything was covered in this syrup. Since this discovery I have been vaping outside, treating it like a regular cigarette. Personally, I've always treated vapes like cigarettes, I don't vape inside except at home, and everywhere else I go outside, away from others.
