just got my notice from phucking photobucket

phuck them! I have a couple hundred images and would be happy to pay a reasonable amount - especially if they would stop the loud flash adds and e-mail spam for coffee mugs and crap. but $400??!!!??? phuck that!!

I RARELY post ANYTHING from my account. When I do, it's here on DU, and I only do it when the links from a source don't work.

I would say that in the last 12 months I've uploaded less than a half dozen images.

Photobucket is far from a necessity for me...I'm OK with not using them

other websites unless you "update" your account to a $400 annual fee. and they did it with little to no notice. People have built blogs and websites, have items for sale, and in general there is a whole lot of INFORMATION out on the internet that is now blocked. for me personally, it is mostly posts here on DU - and in the big scheme of things my little stories are not a big deal. They already screwed up so much of Jim's (MFM) account, most of his old posts don't work already but now the remaining ones are gone or soon will be.

for more than a decade, photobucket was THE go to place for hosting pictures to post on line and most people are not going to pay $400 for something they got for free or a small fee to avoid looking at ads or to have more storage space. it is a really shitty way to treat people. and a lot of compaints are saying don't pay it no matter what because they are probably going out of business anyway. and besides...fuck them! people should download their pix now unless they already have them backed up somewhere and should upload this so it starts showing as the most recent upload.

NOTE: this will either show their new blocking message, or it will show their message with the words "THIS IS WHAT TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE LOOKS LIKE" in bold red and black just above it.

edit - oh I see they blocked on of my sig line images already. fuckers.

But for them to suddenly spring a fee, not good at all.

Your comment about them collecting money and then shutting down, might be on point in some way.

had an other site go from free to ads and then suddenly to money. From what I heard, they lost half their customer base.

Even if a Photobucket user pays the ransom, um, subscription, how do they know Photobucket will still be around next year?

This is going to be a lot less graceful than the shutdown of geocities was.

Every one of those "Please update your account..." messages is like an advertisement telling all who see it "Photobucket Sucks!"

I recognize their previous business plan was unsustainable, but this new plan is even more far fetched.

When I was first on DU, there was a Lounge thread asking for pix of your pets. I said I didn't know how to do that, so a really nice DUer offered to help me out - think I actually emailed her the one pic I had on my computer of my 2 dogs - and she kindly posted it for me! And then she explained how to do it myself using Photobucket - which I've been using ever since. I have quite a collection there now and I've passed on her helpful instructions. I read about this a few days ago in the Photography Forum and have been bummed out ever since.

And that wasn't the only thing - I helped you get through the 700 Club, LOL. I still remember because we both were snowed in that day. And I'll bet half the members here now won't have a clue what I'm talking about!

I don't have an actual site with clickable content:

The ones in my Sig line, for example.
