The Bronx Zoo (sorry, "Wildlife Conservation Society" is really one of the modern wonders of the world. Get there if you ever have the chance. There are a few other zoos in the network that may be more convenient, but you have to get to at least one of them.
What you see in the exhibits is only a tiny part of what they do, and Animal Planet is running a series on some of their projects.
They took a tiny toad threatened for extinction, brought some back to the zoo, bred and studied them, and took them back to Zimbabwe to establish a new colony.
They have a project designing window glass to warn birds before the crash into the glass.
I renewed my membership a while back, and wish I had more to give them.

(899 posts)I have always had bad thoughts about zoos in general because they are usually more like prisons for creatures that committed no crime. I'm so pleased Animal Planet has chosen to bring their work to us so we can get excited about going to a zoo again.

(21,714 posts)My house is very close to the woods, and I get birds running into my windows. They fall on the deck, and sometimes just stun themselves, but on occasion, it is a suicide mission.

(2,302 posts)New Yorker here, and I have been there many times. My kids have taken classes there, even a sleep-over once, and an uncle of mine, a science teacher, got to go "behind the scenes" with his kids and make friends with some of the residents. The Children's Zoo is a wonderful hands-on trip in itself. For a few years, my younger daughter, as a young adult, would request a Bronx Zoo day for her birthday. It's just glorious. Plus, you get to see a great cross-section of humans, too.
It is a New York classic site that has kept up over time, but there are still statues and buildings from its beginnings, and you really appreciate how long it's been there. A true treasure.
