Glad you are cool again.

Our central unit is pretty old. Like a fool I gave away a small unit I had in storage. Should have kept it as a back up.

(34,131 posts)Those little window units are pretty darned good, too. And they are much smaller than they used to be. The most recent one I got at Home Depot was powerful enough to cool the bedroom, bathroom, and the family room/kitchen - which is not a small room.

(72,300 posts)Last summer the repair guy told us our AC was over 30 years old. He did a great job last year. He may say it isn't worth repairing.
I think we may be looking at mortgaging our (fully paid for) home next spring so that we can buy a new AC.

(14,523 posts)tomorrow is free Amazon prime day. They make units that don't require a window. It may be cheaper to get it fixed. I would at least have someone look at it.

(14,523 posts)that it can be moved room to room. I the main areas during the day, then move to the bedroom about an hour before you go to bed.

(72,300 posts)I'll have my repair guy look at the old AC before I spend three thousand or more for a new one.
We just bough a newer car six months ago so a few things will just have to wait.

(8,755 posts)and cool a 1400 sf house (with good insulation).
They were installed in 2003 to replace one large 70s vintage that took up a window.
I cut and framed two "holes" for the AC units through the siding, through the walls and out the drywall. There was some support and finish work so looked nice. The only thing is twice a season or so the filter4s are removed and washed out with a garden hose.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)they are on a rental lot.
I wonder how many of the other 254 home owners here in our 55+ community are aware of that fact.
So I will be installing air conditioners with plexiglass above the units. Come late September I will be moving them into storage until April.
I must have windows otherwise I feel like I'm living in a cave.

(26,315 posts)Maybe you can do some other type of financing. The terms would probably be closer to automobile financing.
I've only done a couple mortgage loans on mobile homes in my time as a mortgage banker. From what I remember mobile homes are titled more like cars. When you take out a mortgage they confiscate the title, destroy it, and unregister it with the state so it can't be sold separately from the land
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)We were issued a bill of sale when we bought this place. I don't remember seeing a title.
I guess the first place to start is by doing a title search.
The central air really should be replaced some time.
We are too old to play the window AC game forever.

(4,412 posts)It's working now but my mother will only let us run it during the day. So starting about 10pm it off and we open all the windows and put on the fans. Needless to say I have many sleepless nights.

(66,294 posts)In winter, you can always put on more layers no matter how cold it gets.
In summer, if the A/C is out, one can only remove so many layers before one gets into trouble with the neighbors, or the police, or the dog...
Hope it cools off for you soon...

(72,300 posts)Last year was the most expensive because we had duct work done in addition to the AC repair.
I know I'll adjust but at this point I still feel a little sick due to the heat. When that happens I hangout in front of the fans with a cold glass of water or tea.

(987 posts)The HVAC guy comes Tuesday - the unit is 20+ years old. We shall see .... In the meantime I am employing all of the old tricks from days of yore when we didn't have AC and it was hotter than Hades. I made it thru husbands grad school in Texas without AC in the house - pregnant the last summer there. It was 100 or more for days on end. 104 the day baby as born. If I could manage Texas heat, I can handle a few days here in Ohio. Zeus Dog is a little warm though. I gave him his own fan - it is at floor level. Thankfully he is smart enough to lay in its air path.

You should be enjoying the cool air by now.

(987 posts)The capacitator was burned out. An easy and fairly inexpensive fix. First repair ever for the unit other than the yearly cleaning maintenance, etc. May the trend continue.
The best news is Mother Nature cooled things off - best kind of AC there is. Love the windows open and hearing all of the outside sounds. Lots of little kids outside playing before bedtime and making wonderful noise. Love it!
Open doors have better smells than fans for Miss Dog's nose.

(26,315 posts)My furnace is only 15 years old but the a/c has gotta be 30 plus. It bangs when it shuts down so I figure its days are numbered. Of course I'll wait and end up paying through the nose when I'm sweating my balls off.
I've also considered a mini split system to replace the a/c. Use it as a heat pump for most days and keep the ducted furnace for sub zero days.
I like the idea of by passing the ducts that were hodgepodged in when they converted this place.

Hassin Bin Sober
(26,315 posts)The uninsulated flex ducts in the uninsulated attic were killing me. Now everything is buried but I would still like to bypass the ducts all together.
It seems like a lot of these splits come pre charged and you can do flare hook ups??
So what's left?
Get someone with gauges and a pump- Check for leaks? Evacuate the lines? And release the refrigerant?
The electrical piece is a no brainer for me. I can run the lines and mount the units.

(5,810 posts)Thank goodness our A/C is keeping the house comfy. The index is forecast to be worse tomorrow. We bought a new unit for our house when we retired in 2011. It was an energy efficient unit and has lived up to the promise that it would help cut our power bill. Our old one was the one put in the house when it was built in 1981 so it definitely was an improvement on energy efficiency!

Hope it helps, and hope you get yours working again soon! Not fun, I know--A/C on my car went out a couple weeks ago, when they went to fix it, they found a serious oil leak (intake manifold!) Total repair bill last week $4800!
How did you come out with your water heater?
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)The neighbor who rescued me last Sunday afternoon ask around ... the suggestion was - lower the heat and turn the water heater back on. Ok. So ~ as soon as I turned the water supply back on water started flowing on the floor again. We will be replacing the water heater in 2 or 3 weeks.
