For Willie Nelson, the autumn of life is colorful
Willie Nelson has been "On the Road Again" -- and again and again -- ever since he released that song back in 1980. And a song on his newest album proves he has no intention of hanging it up any time soon, a point he underscores to our Bob Schieffer, For The Record (An earlier version of this story was originally broadcast on April 2, 2017):
"I woke up still not dead again today
The Internet said I had passed away
If I died I wasn't dead to stay
I woke up still not dead again today.
"Now, how in the world do you come up with that song?" Schieffer asked.
"Oh, I don't know -- I've been killed several times throughout the years!" Nelson laughed. "And so I just thought I'd write something funny about it."
The interview is wonderful. I almost put on a pair of cowboy boots to watch it. I felt left out.
I'll see if I can link to it.
ETA: like this:

(27,792 posts)I've been a Willie Nelson fan for many years.
He will be on tour in August & September.
1st part of Aug. he plays a couple of gigs in Canada, then travels south to play twice in Washington (8/8 & 8/9), then a gig in Salt Lake City (8/13), then south to Saratoga, CA to play at a winery (8/15), then he goes to So. Cal (8/17 & 18), then he heads back north to play the Greek Theater in Berkeley (8/19), then he heads to the east coast for more shows.
Interesting to note that on Aug. 15, he's scheduled to play at a Saratoga, CA winery,
because 4 days earlier, on Friday Aug 11, the B-52s are playing at a different Saratoga, CA winery
(and Saratoga is a small town)
On Sept.16, he headlines the Farm Aid concert in Burgettstown, PA
Also there will be Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Cheryl Crow & other bands as well.

(12,132 posts)For his show here. I'm hoping to get anything in the theater but I'm worried as its only about 2100 seats and presale tix went on sale this morning. I couldn't afford them so I hope there's some general public seats left at 10am
Edit, I couldn't chance it. Joined his fan club and got presale code and bought 2 tickets. Finally get to see Willie Nelson!

(7 posts)Or Haggard, Kristofferson, etc for that matter.
My peers are hooked on Sam Hunt, Luke Bryan, and that manufactured "bro-country" sound but that's shit to my ears. Sure, you had sappy and/or corny twang being churned out in Mr Nelson's day but you also had the man himself:

(12,132 posts)I could find a recording of Kris doing the most rocking version I've ever heard of Help Me Make it Through the Night. I saw it late night on TV many years back and have been searching for that version ever since. I can't remember what show it was. All I know I s it was straight up rock, much faster than I usually hear it and one of the coolest damn things I've ever seen. It's been driving me crazy for years ...to the point I wonder if it really happened. But I can still feel that driving bass pounding the shit out of my old TV speakers.

Old episodes of the Johnny Carson Show are being shown on TV.
ETA: Sometimes versions get pulled from YouTube for copyright infringement. Even if the version you want had been posted there once upon a time, it might be gone now.

(12,132 posts)but it also could have been something like Austin City Limits or some other show with bands performing which I find there have been a lot of lol.
I was just flipping through channels one night and happened to catch this right at the beginning and was mesmerized for the entire song. If I had been more aware of how much I would miss it at the time I would have tried to get a tape into the VCR. I'm thinking it must have been during the VHS era...If it had been more modern I would have smashed that record button on the DVR remote immediately.

Holy crap, Willie Nelson thinks "Democracy Dies in Darkness" would be a good song -- and then he sings it!
