Earlier today, I caught an afternoon showing of Girls Trip at my local cineplex. Without question, the movie is the funniest film I have seen in the past couple of years.
If anyone has not heard of the film, it's about four women, former friends from college who haven't seen each other in years, who take a group vacation to New Orleans. The four friends have wonderful chemistry with each other thanks to the terrific performances of the four actresses portraying them (Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish).
The film is Rated R and it certainly earns the R rating; but it is practically non-stop laughs from beginning to end with plenty of heart to go along with it. Haddish's character (Dina) is the comedic standout as everything she says and does will have you in stitches. If you need to laugh and don't mind adult humor, then I highly recommend the film. See it with a crowd in a theater if you can as it is one of those comedies that elicits infectious laughter from audiences.
<WARNING! Rant Forthcoming>
As mentioned, the movie is hysterical and it is a hit at the box office as film industry reporters think it will have no problems crossing the magical $100 million threshold for blockbuster status. It certainly deserves every penny it makes. My rant has to do with the lack of interest in the film from white audiences - at least in my area. I was the only white man in attendance at my showing. This is simply appalling. I have no doubt plenty of white moviegoers, especially white men, are refusing to see the film because it stars four black women. If the film was about four white women, it would likely challenge Wonder Woman as the most talked about film of the summer. I'm glad the film is a success but it could and should be reaching a much wider audience.
<End Rant>
Fellow DUers, if you're wanting to a catch a movie soon and don't mind some adult humor, go see this film. The characters are enjoyable. The storytelling is relatable, especially if you enjoy catching up with old friends. Plus, it is F-U-N-N-Y! Given the state of the world, we all could benefit from some laughter.

(21,111 posts)I still have a good giggle remembering some of the scenes. The seedy hotel room with the bum who wanted to pay them $3 and his reaction at being rejected. HA ha
And the grapefruit scene and the zip line!
I haven't enjoyed a funny movie like this in a long time. My husband was only 1 of 4 men and they were all white in the theater filled with women (mostly white) and he was cracking up. But now I have to see Dunkirk.

I understand your point....when I raved about the movie FENCES at work (Denzel and Viola - pure magic), someone said, "Isn't that a black movie?"
Er.....say what?
