When will you realize Vienna waits for you?

[IMG][/IMG]

By Billy Joel
Slow down, you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart, then tell me
Why are you still so afraid?

Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You'd better cool it off before you burn it out
You've got so much to do
And only so many hours in a day

But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even
Get halfway through
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you

Slow down, you're doing fine
You can't be everything you want to be
Before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight
Tonight,
Too bad but it's the life you lead
You're so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong, you know
You can't always see when you're right. you're right

You've got your passion, you've got your pride
But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

Slow down, you crazy child
And take the phone off the hook and disappear for awhile
It's all right, you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?
And you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
Why don't you realize, Vienna waits for you
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

I could have had my colleague photograph me in front of some grandiose Hapsburg palace, of which Vienna has no shortage, but in front of the place we were staying at was this immaculately kept up Russian Orthodox church, and I said, what the hell, just get a pic of me in front of that. Austria has the mythical Wachau valley where some of the most incredibly flavored apricots in the world come from, and I always bring home limited edition jars of marmalade/preserves.

I'm rarely down there, but might have to be there a little more often in coming years, so my colleague from the States was over and we started laying the groundwork for our project. It's a little overrun with unsavory characters from Eastern Europe, and you DO have to watch out for yourself, but Vienna remains one of the most impressive cities in Europe.

Between hotel check-out this morning and the time we had to catch the commuter train back to the airport, he suggested we go to the art history museum. I'm not much of an art lover, but I said what the hell, why not. We saw rooms full of Rembrandts, Van Dycks and even a Vermeer. Even a cultural cave man like I am can be in awe of that stuff (and I was).

I don't know what inspired Billy Joel's lyrics, but they kept running through my head as I walked past the Stephansdom and the majestic architecture nearby:

You've got your passion, you've got your pride
But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

You'd have thought I'd have had an earworm of some Mozart symphony instead. Sorry, Amadeus, check with me next time.

1. He wrote the song for his father.

His father left the family in the mid fifties to move to Vienna. Joel thought he was dead until they reconnected during a tour in the 70s.

The story goes Joel witnessed an old woman performing some form of manual labor and he commented about it to his father stating that it was unfortunate she had to engage in that work. His father pointed out that the woman was in fact happy because she had a job and felt useful. She could contribute.

Billy Joel considered the words and realized he was not considering the cultural differences and was evaluating the people he witnesses based upon his American experience. He came to the conclusion that older people in Vienna we're not disposable, that they still held a purpose that gave them pride. He wrote the song as an anthem to let older folks know that they aren't useless, that they can have a purpose in life regardless of age... Vienna waits for you literally and figuratively

2. Thanks for that

I always wondered where those lyrics came from. The part about "you can get what you want or you can just get old" seemed like a great line for a universal philosophy--one I have adopted for myself to a large extent--but I always wondered what inspired it. It now all fits in. Austria was under Soviet occupation until 1955, the last country in "western (kinda, sorta)" Europe to have them there. They people speak German, but they definitely aren't Germans.

leave. My art history classes were taught in the Kunsthistoriches Museum. It was so amazing to learn in a real museum instead of from books and slides. I have traveled quite a bit since then but have not been back to Vienna, but I am longing to see it again. It is truly one of the most beautiful cities in Europe! Thank you for reminding me!

6. Wow, lucky you--and how's this for a coincidence......?

My American colleague, with whom I had a project there Monday and Tuesday, saw we had a few free hours Tuesday morning before heading to the airport, and suggested we go.........to the Kunsthistorisches Museum! VERY impressive.

I don't blame you for wanting to go back. It's a shame, really, that I live a quick 80 minute flight from there, and get down there so seldom.

You are so lucky to be so close! I studied right next to the Opera House on Operngasse. When I lived in NYC there was a museum called the Neue Gallerie which was the Lauder collection of German and Austrian expressionist art and they had two Viennese cafes in the building so sometimes I would just go and spend half a day there (it is a fairly small museum housed in an Upper East Side mansion) and pretend that I was back in Vienna. It wasn't the real thing, but it was close!

8. Dsseldorf is close to everything

Two hour flight or less (in many cases 1 hour) to Paris, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Geneva, Zürich, München, Vienna, Barcelona, Marseille, Milano, Firenze, Kraków, London, Dublin, Scotland, Mallorca and the other Balearics. We could do a culturally filled weekend in a different city all year and not get repetitive if we had the time and energy.

We were in Vienna for a week in 2013. Loved it. Just loved it.

The movie Museum Hours had just come out before we went, which is set in and around the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

It was amazing to see all the Klimt's at the Belvedere. And then, of course, there is the movie about the Woman in Gold and the story
of Maria Altmann getting the Klimt painting of her aunt, Adele Bloch-Bauer, back from the Austrians (stolen by the Nazis), which now hangs at the Neue Galerie in New York.

My dear Lionel and I have toured through a lot of Europe, and I am embarrassed to admit that I don't remember if we got to Vienna. It's been awhile and we saw so much that it all blurs together.

Your adventure sounds wonderful, as always!

I hope to get back to Europe someday........if my joints and my legs will allow.

And the castle in the back yard isn't gong anywhere, either. At least, it hasn't gone anywhere since the year 973, and old habits die hard.
