I called my bank's fraud department

One of my Visa cards is the one issued by my bank. I went online to make a payment, which I do by transferring funds from my bank's checking account to the credit card account. I could also transfer from my savings, but have never done that. That's why it asked me from which account I wished to transfer funds (to pay my credit card) and showed me the accounts available.

Two of the accounts (a checking and savings) I saw were connected to a credit union, which I have never heard of - nor had any account with. My concern was that whoever had those credit union accounts could transfer my money from my bank accounts, leaving me with zero.

It took about 30 minutes of me talking on the phone with the bank's fraud department. after which they took those credit union accounts off my bank account, started a fraud investigation, and will also contact the credit union (which is local and a legitimate facility). I also had to make changes to my bank's passwords, etc. The last time I had a credit union account was when I lived in Portland, Maine twenty-seven years ago.

I'm to get a letter from the bank with info about initiating the fraud investigation, and later a result of the investigation.

I don't have a lot of money and I can't afford to lose what I've got.

Good reminder for everyone to keep their eyes peeled for things that just don't look right. You did the right thing.

it may take 30 years for that to work through the system.
