broken leg - that was then the origin of the the phrase "your name is Mudd"

Wikipedia says Roger is distantly(?) related but doesn't say how.

When I was younger CBS had Roger Mudd, Daniel Schorr, Cronkite, Dan Rather, Eric Severeid - man what a bunch of heavy hitters.

Who knows, maybe asking Ted "why" he wanted to run for prez was not a premeditated sabotage, something every candidate should be able to answer.

He was in Houston to do a story that had something to do with the school district. It was the early 70s. My mother was at Reagan High School for an in service. Reagan (now Heights High School) was Dan Rather's alma mater. Sometime during the day she noticed Roger walking with the principal and went up an asked "Are you Roger Mudd?" So she asked him why he was there and just general chit chat. Then she said, "You know Dan Rather went here. Maybe we can sneak a peak at his transcript."

The principal said "Oh, only certified teachers can view student's grades." Roger said, "Well, actually I am a certified teacher." So they checked out young Mr. Rather's grades. Of course this was totally unethical, but Dan didn't have anything to be ashamed of.

Actually, Dan's sister Pat was an English teacher at a high school where I taught science for 4 years (late 80s). It was a conservative school district north of Houstin. We had the same conference period one year.

She and another teacher were sitting together smoking cigarettes in the teacher's lounge one day. She looked over at me and said "She's one".

I went over to them and asked "I'm one what?"

She said " A DEMOCRAT!" She was right! We became friendly after that and it was so nice to meet a couple of teachers who weren't Reagan worshipers.

Dan's brother Don went into education also and was an administrator in the Houston ISD for many years.

Sam Houston Institute for Teachers and the board changed the schools name to Sam Houston State when the students started wearing the school initials on their sweatshirts S.H.I.T.

It started out as Sam Houston Normal Institute, the Sam Houston State Teachers College, then Sam Houston State College and finally Sam Houston State University.
