Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsNext Tuesday by this time I will have a new aortic valve
At least that is the schedule - next Tuesday morning I go into the hospital for a trans arterial valve replacement (TAVR). They will put a wire up my femoral artery to my heart, then a balloon which will be inflated in the old valve to open it up, then insert the new valve. I'll spend probably one night in the hospital so they can monitor my heart to make sure everything is working, then I go home the next afternoon.
About a month later when they can get me off the blood thinners, I have to go back to have a kidney removed - they found a mass when doing the tests to get me ready for valve replacement. In addition I have a hernia that they will fix at the same time.
I stressed all weekend since I had not heard anything as of Friday what the plan was. They had to get the TAVR surgeon, the kidney surgeon and the internal medicine surgeon together to sort out a plan of action. No wonder there was a delay!

(34,131 posts)My Mom was diagnosed with a bad valve ten years ago - refused surgery and is still hanging on. She's 96 so I've been planning on at least thirty more years.
Thanks!

(4,033 posts)I had open heart surgery (triple bypass, clot removal, and maze procedure) about 10 years ago and I've had doctors tell me that if they hadn't seen the scar they wouldn't believe I had surgery. They do amazing things with the heart these days, so yeah, another 30 years or so sounds eminently reasonable! (I'm planning on another 20+ at yeast myself.)

(34,131 posts)I'm thinking I may be up to posting on DU by Tuesday evening. The surgery time isn't set but probably between 5:30 and 8:30 AM and it only takes two hours. By mid afternoon I should be fully awake and feeling better than in a long time since the blood flow will be much better.

(34,131 posts)Yes, I remember - and everyone who I've talked to that had valve replacement or knows someone who did did well and felt much better after. With the TAVR, there is no even serious surgery recovery time. The only incision will be a small (maybe 1/2 inch) cut in my groin.

(34,131 posts)At the time this video was made, the procedure was only approved for patients at high risk for surviving open heart surgery. This spring it was approved for intermediate risk patients. I was trying to get into a clinical trial to get it approved for low risk patients. Before they found the mass on my kidney, I was low risk and the trial was my only chance of getting TAVR.
Because of the kidney I was reclassified so they could do the TAVR. It's a bizarre thing to celebrate, but I am happy - first, that they found the kidney before it could metastasize if it is cancer; second that I can get the TAVR; third that they can combine the other two procedures.
I've had eleven operations since 2001. I heal up pretty fast so I am not too worried. I'm just tired of spending so much of my time healing!

(34,131 posts)The hernia has been getting worse over the last couple of years. I planned to pursue getting it repaired this year but last year they heard the heart murmur. Even my hand doctor wouldn't talk to me about fixing my trigger thumb until the heart was fixed. It's taken since January to get the heart diagnosed partly because of insurance (old policy holder would not approve some of the tests) and partly because of family issues (mother in law died in January after a very bad year).
The kidney was a complete surprise - no symptoms and it would not have been found if I had no been trying to get into a clinical trial for a chance at the TAVR procedure - and even the trial would have been a 50% chance. Because of the kidney, I was downgraded to an intermediate risk for open heart surgery - and intermediate risk has been approved for TAVR as of last spring.
After all of this, I have to go back to the hand doctor - now I have more fingers that are locking up. I may go in between to get injections to put that off.
Getting old sucks.
Thanks for the best wishes!

(11,411 posts)Best of luck. Think of your plans after recuperation. Here's a BIG hug! Enjoy the pain meds. Don't be a hero and remember you don't need the pain pills when you start getting stronger. Lean on your friends. Plant your spring bulbs and remember every day we have is gravy.
Oh yea. Buy a beautiful rob.

(34,131 posts)I'm a very cooperative and obedient patient. Frankly I don't need much in the way of pain meds - I have a very high resistance to pain. When my knees were bone on bone for years I found other medications to reduce the inflammation and didn't use the opiods the doctors gave me.
The weeds have gotten away from us so as soon as possible after the second operation I will be out in the garden pulling those!
Thanks!

(34,131 posts)If they can - then they can get the TAVR rather than open heart surgery. The Medtronic low risk clinical trial will finish next March and they should be able to get approval fro the FDA quickly. Edwards is also running a clinical trial which is just a little behind.
If they are intermediate or high risk for open heart surgery, they should get TAVR.
Even the head of surgery at the hospital (who was the urologist I consulted about the kidney) was surprised that low risk patients could not currently get TAVR. He's the one who insisted I needed to have TAVR so the kidney operation could be done sooner.

Another holiday season shot to hell, though. Last year on Thanksgiving my husband's appendix burst - but we didn't figure it out for days. So no Thanksgiving, no Christmas.
