I think I mis-understand the nature of a group--

the intro says that a group is a safe place for people of similar views.
so when I wish to communicate with people who have similar views to mine, I go to the Socialist progressive group, or Occupy Underground, bec. by the name I take these to be the most left-wing groups.

However, anyone can post in response to a post, no matter their point of view.

so - I don't understand - why have different groups?

I'm not asking a rhetorical question, I really want to know how best to use the format.

thanks.

Welcome, by the way. You've probably read this already, but just in case you haven't or if someone else has questions, here is the link with our statement of purpose: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1024881

The Admins set groups up so volunteer members can make sure that posters who do respond to OPs here understand that this group is a safe haven for those who wish to discuss left-wing, socialist ideas.

So while anyone can respond, posters can be discouraged from harassing subscribers here if this group goes against their grain.

The hosts here warn off posters who are posting contrary to the SOP, and if need be, these posters can be blocked from posting in here if they don't respond to a civil warning.

Is that a little more clear?

As the greatest page. And unless someone proves to be a total ahole and gets themselves blocked anyone can reply. Best not to have any illusions.

it was like this on DU2 as well.

The difference is that on DU2 groups were quieter. Here they come up on latest pages and things like that so we will sometimes get folks in here that are really not of a like mind-set. We remind them that they clicked from elsewhere and they usually just leave.

it also goes on the latest threads. If someone is perusing the latest threads and sees something they disagree with strongly, sometimes they just reply without realizing WHERE they are replying. Usually if they're egregiously anti-socialist, they won't last too long. They are either banned or they are warned about it and stop posting here.

It's pretty rare, but we have banned a few (three I think) and I'm sure we will in the future.

Now none of this means we can't disagree with each other and argue about it. It just means we try to keep the rancor and name-calling down during these disagreements. Either way, keep posting what you want and the hosts will take care of the Red baiting. And if we miss something, PM us. We'll take care of it.

It is pretty much as I thot.

I guess I didn't realize that posts to any group, also went on to a general forum where anyone could reply.

but that's ok.

glad to know there are people here keeping an eye out to keep it safe space.

thanks!
