Just finished it for the second time. Does anyone know of something similar? Preferably set after 1880 but not required.

Sister Carrie, by Theodore Dreiser
Neither is exactly like Sinclair's work, but they both deal with similar periods and issues.
A more modern book, set in the same time period but published in 1976, one that tells a magnificent story, is Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow. It's a pro-peace novel, considerably different from an anti-war tale.
