OLD SAYBROOK >> A group of about eight unionized carpenters picketed outside of the Max’s Place shopping center project Friday, one day after the state Department of Labor announced it had issued stop work orders to three contractors working on the retail development.

Members of the New England Regional Council of Carpenters picketed for about three hours outside the Kohl’s department store that is being built as part of the complex, located at the intersection of Boston Post Road, Spencer Plains Road and Center Road West.

David Jarvis, an organizer for the union and a member of its New London-based Local 24, said the demonstration was organized to protest the fact that one of the contractors working on the Kohl’s, Georgia-based G&F Group LLC, had brought in workers from outside Connecticut rather than hiring locally.

“Connecticut contractors, unionized or not, cannot compete for work when something like this happens,” Jarvis said.

How can a company maximize profits if it can't find some way to exploit workers or dodge paying it's fair share.
