BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - This September marks the 50th anniversary of a farm labor strike that spanned the country and reached across oceans.
Delano was ground zero.
"In those days, it was very hard, because we were making like 80 cents or 90 cents an hour picking grapes," said Maria Saludado Magaña. "We didn't have facilities in the fields, no bathrooms and no cold water."
The 75-year-old Magaña is one of the original farm workers who joined farm labor leader Cesar Chavez when Chavez joined a group of Filipino farm workers who had walked out on strike against grape growers on Sept. 8, 1965.
