interesting results on PBS flea marketing show this week

The "experts" went shopping at Brimfield. They bought pretty well, they thought.

Well, at auction they basically were skunked. Horribly skunked. These are career pickers. And they were skunked.

The moral? Choose your auction house very carefully. The one on this episode just didn't have enough action going to generate reasonable bids.

Didn't you think they were paying ridiculous prices for most of that stuff though?

I agree that the auction house did them no favors--in fact, they seemed to downplay the items rather than try to sell them. But yikes, I don't see how they could have made money on any of those pieces at the prices paid.

They had to haggle and haggle to get even those prices from dealers. Brimfield dealers are looking for decorators and noobs to pay inflated prices. I don't know what a pair of Czech vases should be worth, but those pickers sure ought to!

I've been to Brimfield -- it's a lot of fun! So, so much to see. I saw things there that I've never seen anywhere else.

We're all a bunch of inbreeders, though. The shop I sell at always has lots of sales the month before one of the Brimfield shows and I'm sure most of it is dealers stocking up. I try to leave meat on the bone for that very reason.
