She was one of the beautiful ones. She was really thin though, with her backbone protruding and her ribs showing.

But to tell the truth I like models who look like regular people that you encounter in everyday life. Old, young, thin, fat, Black, White. All of them.

14. Graphite and charcoal drawings have always been my favorites

Even when I look at Da Vinci’s work I prefer his drawings much more than his paintings. There’s something much more compelling to me about drawings. It’s always puzzled me why people seem to be dismissive of drawings, like somehow they aren’t important.

I miss life drawing too. There isn’t anything that can take its place.

When I see a portrait done this well, I just don't want to even try. My people look like they were done by a three-year old. It's embarrassing.

13. Admittedly, it takes dedication to the point of manic compulsion

which includes lots and lots of time and practice. For me the most interesting thing is the human face and its infinite variations. It never ceases to amaze me that a small handful of features which we all have in common can have millions, if not billions, of unique variations so that no two faces are the same. I’ve been a people watcher all my life, so I naturally gravitated towards rendering their likeness.

The opportunity to recreate the human face was unequalled in figure drawing classes when the models hold a pose for an hour at a time. And the truth is I took figure drawing classes for years so I was able to eventually capture the unique features in people’s faces. I did throw away a lot of crappy drawings so what people see is my best work!
