(6,996 posts)Director David Lean was casting his next film, Lawrence Of Arabia. He had been refused by Laurence Olivier, Marlon Brando and Albert Finney. Then he saw an unknown actor, Peter O'Toole, in "The Day They Robbed The Bank Of England" (4:00am).
The rest is history.

This has to be one of the great caper movies I have ever seen.
Have to say I never heard of it prior to watching it.
The films from the late 1960s-to around 1973 are the least familiar to me.
Great concept, plotting to rob the safety deposit boxes of master criminals who after the robbery couldn't go to the police
Great character actors, and great location shots, and great chase the last part of the movie.
And it was almost tongue in cheeck with Goldie's role.
Playing off her image of being a stupid blonde of the 60s(like her role in Laugh-In), yet in fact being the brains of the whole thing.

(16,984 posts)I have to give credit to TCM for turning up titles beyond the ones everyone expects.
They've been running a lot of Loretta Young pre-Code films, for instance -- an interesting choice with an actress who cultivated a wholesome image later in her career but had a few secrets.
