His Girl Friday (1940) is Howard Hawks' speedy and hysterically funny, modern-style screwball comedy, and one of the best examples of its kind in film history. Although it has an 92-minute running time, the breath-taking, fast-paced film has more than enough dialog for a 3-hour movie. The film marked the beginning of a number of screwball comedies in the 1940s that emphasized the conflict for women in deciding between love/marriage and professional careers.

(67,786 posts)I love the old comedies. They hold up today and remain funny. They do their comedy with no raw language and almost no double entendre. Movies for grownups with a G rating. I would love to see them start making such movies again.
I love the Thin Man series for a similar reason.
"Waiter, please serve the nuts. I mean, please serve my guests the nuts. I mean . . . ." Lines like that delivered at a machine gun pace.

I'm a huge fan of "bad" language, when successfully applied. But it's nice to class it up, too.
I love language altogether, and this movie is...aces?
I had one day as an extra on Switching Channels, The remake of His Girl Friday, which is a pretty dismal affair. I don't think there was much chemistry between the leads.
During a break in the scene where Reeve gets trapped in the glass elevator because of his fear of heights, Turner was speaking to Reeve. His back was to me, but when Ms. turner was done speaking Mr. Reeve reeled around, silently mouthed an expletive, and headed off.
It looked as if she was attempting to direct him in the scene. Like I say, they don't have a good connection on screen.
