TCM Schedule for Friday, October 28, 2016 -- What's On Tonight - Terror Classic Movies - Universal H

A scientist's experiments with invisibility turn him into a madman.
Dir: James Whale

On the DVD short documentary, Claude Rains' daughter tells of a time when the two went to see this movie in the theater years after it was made. It was bitterly cold and his face was completely covered by a hat and scarf. When he spoke to ask for the tickets, the attendant immediately recognized his voice and wanted to let them in for free. Rains was quite upset at this and demanded that he pay full price.

A British nobleman undergoes a startling transformation when he's bitten by a gypsy werewolf.
Dir: George Waggner

Evelyn Ankers later recalled that during the filming of the final confrontation, she was required to faint, and then to stay on the floor until the fight scene between Lon Chaney Jr. and Claude Rains was finished. Ankers recalled that during one take, she stayed on the floor so long that the low-hanging chemical fog being used in the scene caused her to pass out. When the take was over, the film crew began rearranging the cameras and lights for the next take, not noticing that Ankers had not emerged from the floor. Finally someone on the crew realized that Ankers was missing, and she was pulled up from the fog and revived.

Among the unconventional elements of this film was the soundtrack. At a time (early 1930s) when movie music was usually limited to the titles and credits, Edgar G. Ulmer had an almost continuous background score throughout the entire film.

Noteworthy recordings arrived in 1947 from Frank Sinatra on Columbia, Dick Haymes on Decca and Dennis Day on RCA Victor. Unfortunately, Mr. Young's score failed to attain an Oscar nomination in the category of Dramatic Score of 1944.

On a remote island, a mad scientist turns wild animals into human monsters.
