It may be from the 60s not much later. It may have starred Donald Sutherland. The action may have taken place in England. The Donald Sutherland character was the only witness able to exonerate a convicted/executed man who maintained his innocence throughout. The uncalled witness was unable to offer his testimony because he had been shipped overseas and was unaware of the trial. Nearly a year after the execution the witness visited the family to return an article of clothing left by the condemned man in the witnesses car. The witness was unaware that the man had been executed.
