(16,846 posts)I've watched the video you posted more than once in a row now and I swear there's another guitar hidden somewhere because JTE plays that claw hammer style so effortlessly that it looks like his just strumming and picking but there's so much more going on there!

(16,846 posts)I read an interview with him not long ago where he talked about how much he loves and respects old traditional music. He also talked about the gutsiest he pays and said he felt really shamed by a kid coming up to him after a concert and asking him what guitar he was playing and the kid telling his father he wanted a guitar just like JTEs. He was playing a several thousand dollar Gibson and he said since then, he's relied more on well built affordable guitars.

Looks like it should sound like one chord but it has so much more going on...

(33,643 posts)Despite the coke talk here, I believe he really liked his speed ... like Steve (along with the hard dope). I'd be a bit surprised if he's not high here, TBH.
IIRC, he sobered up for the making of Harlem River Blues ... and that's when Jason Isbell was getting sober too (Jason's the 2nd guitarist on most of the songs) ... I believe they've both credited Ryan Adams with helping them a lot in their early sobriety, as he'd gotten clean a couple years before.
I'm not sure JTE made it through the HRB tour w/o a relapse though ...

(4,138 posts)Pretty sure I've heard recordings of TVZ playing this one too.
And yeah, that's a really full sound for such a sparse playing style. Good guitarring.
