Music Reaction YouTube videos....do you like them?

I have discovered this little trend on YouTube in the last months. I never thought I'd get hooked, but there is something awesome about watching someone, who has never heard a certain beloved album you cherish, hearing it for the first time and reacting. Watching their faces when you know a particular riff is coming, and delighting in their astonishment.

So the three classic favorite bands of mine are Yes, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin. I can still feel the urge to play again any of their music on a binge once in awhile. Their music is timeless.

What I like even more as I watch, is knowing how a lot of these young folks grew up in inner urban environments where perhaps all they grew up on was hip hop and rap, and whatever pop songs they overheard on the radio. Or for some they know more relatively recent heavy death metal as their only source of rock music. It is probably a lot for them to sit down and listen to long prog rock songs and sides of albums, because they have grown up on the 3 min. song. Its like some hadn't even realized such music existed. Long stretches of guitar, or keyboard solos, without any vocals, are now unheard of. Where the music of the instrumentalists is valued as much as the music of the vocalist.

Anyways, here are some of my favorites. Does anyone else watch these and what are your favorite first time reactions?

Starts @ about 5 min mark, Yes, Close to the Edge full album

Pink Floyd, Time.

Pink Floyd, The Great Gig In The Sky

Led Zeppelin, When the Levee Breaks.

But some are legit. Classic rock radio is no longer the ubiquitous background music it was for those of us over 35-40. Kids in their twenties will not have heard much of it unless they sought it out or their parents were fans. It's hard to believe because it's freakin' classic rock, but time has moved on to new stuff. They see the Grunge era as old rock music.

I hope the music in these reaction videos blows the minds of the younger generations and creates new enthusiasts.

years have passed?
Please think about it folks
I know all this kind of music saw PF in concert when I was very young etc., but had kids late in life . My kids are teens now and they could not name or recognize any of these songs.they really would have to be immersed in it to know old songs like that and it’s not really around much anymore like you said as background tunes to our current lives is it?
They also can not recognize old soul or funk or punk so is is more about time not style

They recognize the band names from t shirts people still wear or when people mention them but even more popular old music groups like say the Beatles, or icons like recently passed Aretha Franklin , of course they have heard of them by name but it's hard for them to know who is who when they hear songs
(Remember the lyrics to -Hey 19< and how long ago was that written? )
They are not against it, just unaware of it and maybe if given the chance , they would react like the people posted in the vids above.
I do not think any of them are fake or rehearsed much. They are open to listening to old unheard music and react to it imo
Just not their experience as they have their own music and c’mon it’s been a long time .

I don’t think the videos of elders, listen to newer music is rehearsed or fake either

Last night on the Grammys Janae Monelle came on to perform with a guitar . Yes they all know her and so do I but none of us are big followers and most of the new music genres do not feature guitar although it seems to be resurging in popularity.

Anyway she opened with a few cords and I asked do you know this songshe is singing ? it sounds like Prince
They did not know the song or know that it sounded like Prince or why I was saying that
As the song went on I said that is Prince ror written as aa Prince tribute I told them and she has performed with him
So I went to my tablet after the song and Prince had inspired her and worked with the song although she has song credit and dirty computer , her new album, some of it is intentionally Prince soundis, so the teenagers learn a little that way when new music performers work with oldie but goodies or with songs like Finesse (which mimics In Living Color in tribute and 80s sound ) by Bruno Mars w /Cardi B . stuff like that

Sadly I have old friends that give the teens classic cds hoping to edjumicate them in whatever the friend thinks is “the greatest” , but if the kids even have a CD player I am not sure where to find it, so that too

Oh and they are not dull minded about music really both can read music and one plays classical sometimes while studying and both played in orchestra when younger
it’s just that it is 2019 and they listen to what music is being made now so an introduction to old songs like that make novel YouTube videos

A little old James Brown action too? From last night Grammy winner

It was very enjoyable! I wish I could hear Dark Side of the Moon for the first time again. Watching reactions will be the closest I'll ever get.

My favs were by a guy called WeabooReacts. His slowly growing, giant grins at certain parts were amazing and so joyful. During the guitar solo in Time, he collasped back in his chair, devastated, mind blown. A commenter said (can't remember the exact time, so making one up): "3:42, Mr. Gilmour claims another victim."

So true, so true.

Dark Side blew him away, and he was listening to it with brief gaps between each song (without the melding transitions of the album). He went on to check out Animals and WYWH and enjoyed them greatly.

Edit: I just looked him up again and it looks like he's been very busy listening to all sorts of albums and songs people have recommended. Looking forward to watching him listen to Rage Against the Machine's debut album.

Those slowly developing grins, confused delight, in those same moments that you yourself experienced years ago listening to a song like Time for the first time. Scary how that song can haunt you all your life.

That is what i like about the first Close to the Edge reaction video. The young man, based on his reactions, has truly never heard Yes before. For sure not their more conceptual lengthy songs. He is a bit annoying at first, animatedly talking to subscribers and working the keys on his computer. That oblivious annoyance was actually interesting when comparing that to later as he slowly became less concerned with subscribers etc, and was slowly but surely falling for the music, and couldn't help but express his joy and appreciation in listening to it.

that is Weaboo in the top clip. His production values have improved since I first watched him, lol! It looks like he has gotten a lot of subscribers, too, so that's great. I haven't watched him listen to Yes yet, but am going to after posting this. I know what you mean about seeing him get drawn into the music. It's so very satisfying to watch it happen. I end up smiling just as big as he is.

I don't know if you are familiar with the Venture Brothers (amazing cartoon on Adult Swim, very highly recommended) but I kept thinking about this clip:

Later on, Rusty realizes he forgot about Dean and runs back into the room in a panic. "Oh no! Dean's fallen in a Floyd hole!" They do a good job with the music, too, it sounds like Close To the Edge.

Although to be anal about it, I take issue that Close to the Edge, if that was the inference, is somehow an easy starter for Prog Rock. Their arguably most complex musical compositions.

Oh, I didn't realize that was Weaboo, the guy you were referring to. Like I said, he is a bit annoying to watch at first, distracted and a little ADD. But that's exactly why his transformation into a mesmerized fan was so enjoyable to watch. Just like Roger Dean here!

There are a few first reactions to that song on YouTube. Such a unique song both in its structure and its inception. And the amazing emotional journey Clare Torry takes you on with her sensuous wailing about death and dying.

Zep is pretty hard to avoid, so most had heard these tunes before, most likely on their parents stereos. I love the kid who knows all the songs and roars with approval! Then there's the "rebel" that can't admit he likes them. Wait a few years kid.

But what amazed me when I watched that one, was how placid these kids were to such a hard rock sound. And for a few, how much they really liked it, even though it is nothing like what they hear today. If the same age kids were sat down to listen to that music when it came out, they'd probably run out of the room crying.

Just watched Weaboo listen to Do You Feel Like We Do and I think the talk box broke him, lol!

I've heard these songs so so many times, I forget how badass they are. He flipped over Foreplay/Long Time by Boston, another one I had been sick to death of for decades. It's like having your ears reopened. I love it.

He listened to Maggot Brain, too.

"He part of the family now. He my Uncle Framp"

Weaboo is quite entertaining as a "reactor". And he's not faking his joy in what he hears. You can tell he has an incredible musical taste and ability to appreciate all of this "old" music, its just that he has never been exposed to it.

Some of these reaction vids are to music I do not like at all, from the same Youtubers, like other forms of extreme metal, which just sounds like noise to me. Ya I know...Get off my lawn!

Its just great to know some of that music we suspected was timeless, and would appeal to future generations, was proven to be just that.
