Ok, before we start, a quick confession.
I never understood the whole "Popular bands suck" or "If one of my favorite bands gets popular, I quit listening" frame of mind.
That attitude is bizarre to me... I always want my favorites to get popular make millions and sell out every show.
Anyway, I'm noodling around DUMA and see an old Stones vid, and there is Bill Wyman standing still playing the bass.
Immediately the line "She stood just like Bill Wyman - Now I'm her biggest fan" hit my frontal lobes and I felt compelled to pour a rye on the rocks and take deep dive into the Smithereens' Discography

This is a fantastic song and I kinda like the video too.

(34,375 posts)They achieved some success with "The Boys Are Back in Town" from the movie "48 Hrs." but they should've been more famous. I guess the world wasn't ready for an all-black rock 'n roll band. i saw them live and they absolutely killed. They were so damned tight.

(33,643 posts)reorganization thing going on at the time there, too ... I think only like 10K copies of #1 Record got pressed and the company lacked distribution deals, so basically nobody could buy the damn album, it simply didn't make it to record stores. And things didn't get any better by the time they made Radio City.
At least Big Star ended up getting their due in their later years, before they all passed away ... so there's that ...

(3,769 posts)They're still touring, catering to their hard core fans. Still making new music, 16 albums later. They all (sadly) have to keep day jobs. Even Rolling Stone thinks they should have had a better shot at the big time.
Saw them in a North Georgia dive bar last month. They deserve better.

(3,064 posts)As an aside, I was actually at the concert where this shooting took place. It was at a nighttime outdoors venue on the northern outskirts of Austin. Around 1971.
There was a lot of commotion when the shooting occurred but I didn't really pay it much mind. Having way too good of a time and just blew it off. Heard about it from word of mouth street talk and there was a story about it in the American-Statesman.
And a couple of years later they put out
Rock and Roll Widow. And I thought " maybe this tune's about what happened in Austin."
And a couple of years later I read an interview and they mentioned that the song was written about that night in Austin.
So that's my Forrest Gump moment about Wishbone Ash and an event that they wrote a song about.
Heartstrings
(7,349 posts)Saw them at a Melody Makers Awards Concert in London, Sept. of '72....immediately bought a vinyl and brought it back to the states when I came home. No one had ever heard of them. Emerson, Lake and Palmer were the headliners, Wishbone Ash came on 2nd, followed by this band, Focus....
And the band I don't even remember I saw was last....Genesis, with Peter Gabriel.
There might have been a little wacky weed to impede my memory. Still have a poster of that concert....

They should write a book with Crack the Sky called -"Oh, you're big in Baltimore? Bummer" since both bands are huge in coastal Maryland.
Here they are being introduced by Carlene Carter doing a cover of one of Carlene's step dad's tunes

cemaphonic
(4,138 posts)They were HUGE in Seattle in the 90's, but they weren't grunge, so the major labels weren't interested. Eventually, Warner gave them a shot, but with pretty halfhearted promotion, and by then popular attention had moved onto pop, boy bands and bling rap. But they were a tight band that melded a lot of different genres (70s rock, Madchester, ambient/industrial) and put on legendary shows with (low budget, but very elaborate) light shows, video, costumes, etc.

(182,786 posts)Soul Asylum - Their album "And the horse they rode in on" is a masterpiece. Pirner rips apart American culture with power chords and melodies. Just phenomenal.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_Asylum
Yes they had a big hit following that with "Runaway Train" but I hated it. This was probably the end of my BIG IS BAD phase but I've learned to re-embrace it.
The albums before Horse were really good too.
Buffalo Tom
Pure power chords. The last musical act on Jon Stewart's MTV Show. He later mentioned them on TDS as his top 4 bands along with Springsteen. I had my driver play "Tails lights Fade" as I left my Army barracks in 1993.
Grant Lee Buffalo
Okay this would have been a stretch of mainstream but the first time I heard "Lone Star Song" at a party I literally said "Who the fuck is THIS?" Much like the first time I heard REM.
Yes I get the power chord Buffalo theme. Hey!
On EDIT - Game Theory. Scott Miller. "Lolita Nation" should be (and often is) listed amongst the top ten albums of all time. Up there with anything Brian Wilson or Lennon-McCartney ever did.
