In my 1st car I kept a shoe box full of 8track tapes (Part 3)
Ive talked about how popular Southern Rock was when I was a teenager in coal mine country, so it shouldnt be a surprise that I had a pretty solid collection of albums from a wide swath of bands who were active back then.
But I didnt bother keeping that kind of library in a shoebox.
You have to remember that 8 tracks were shitty. Because the tapes were both fragile and BIG curating a collection of music for your car just wasnt worth it.
The tapes were going to fail and it was usually too much of a pain in the ass to keep hunting specific albums And thats where K-Tel records came to the rescue.
You could always pick up a K-Tel Star Power, The Elite, or Full Tilt or some other contrived bullshit name collection tape. No need to go to a music store That was for buying real albums and concert tickets. Naw, 8 tracks were more of an expendable commodity that you picked up on the fly.
K-Tel is the only company name I remember but there were many more and we all bought those tapes from barrels in the K-Mart, Sears or at that one big gas station off I79.
I remember having a tape called Pure Southern in particular because it had such a wide array of Southern Rock bands.
Also this is good excuse to do some songs from bands that show various aspects of the Southern Rock Genre.
Bands that were really good but maybe not worth a whole thread themselves.
