Racism was practically a point of pride in the industry at the time. God only knows how much abuse he had to deal with.

I lived in Branson, MO for several years and a friend I worked with told me this story (so it wasn't me personally but I believed her). Mr. Pride had his own show there a number of years back and lived in a condo complex. His older neighbor noticed Charley out mowing his little condo yard one day and not realizing who he was thought he was a lawn service guy. Asked him if he could mow his yard later and Charlie agreed. He cut the man's grass before telling him who he was...guess the neighbor was (of course) very embarrassed. Told him he was sorry but Charley laughed and greatly enjoyed his joke...Cool dude....
