Steven Van Zandt: On life in New York, Rock Hall Inductions and the future of concerts
CLEVELAND, Ohio – You don’t need a genius to tell you that Steven Van Zandt, aka Little Steven, is a busy man. There are IMBD pages, record releases, touring schedules, charitable organizations and social media for that.
Van Zandt has spent much of past few years touring with his own band. He dropped Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul’s “Summer of Sorcery” album in 2019, plotted a corresponding tour and curated a boxed set that collects all his solo records released between 1982 and 1999.
On top of that, Van Zandt continues his charitable work the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation, dedicated to keeping music classes in schools and lowering high school dropout rates. The foundation’s TeachRock program creates educational materials and lesson plans for music, arts, social studies and science classrooms for free.
But even Little Steven can’t beat a pandemic. He’s spent the past month or so quarantined in his New York City home.
“It’s weird,” Van Zandt says, phoning in from his living room. “It take a little getting used to. But we’re trying to work through it.”
Quarantine has provided Van Zandt the opportunity to revisit the popular “Little Steven’s Underground Garage” radio series, which still airs on Sirius XM. For the first time, Van Zandt has pulled out full interviews, snippets of which were featured on the series, and is presenting them as the “Qoolest Quarantine Collection.” The list of guests is a who’s who of rock and roll legends, from Keith Richards and Paul McCartney to Iggy Pop, Ray Davies and, of course, Bruce Springsteen.
