Had this guitar player who told me he used to come home from school high school to find his dad sitting drunk in front of the stereo crying to Pink Floyd. Man, I thought, how fucking weird. Fast forward a couple years. It's Sunday morning and Glamrock's getting his early morning drunk on (you see where this is going, yeah?) Sitting in front of the computer, listening to tunes, probably lurking on DU. This song comes on, and I'm in tears. Oh Jesus Christ! I've turned into Marcus' dad!

(16,858 posts)He was often home from work before I got off the bus most afternoons at 4:30pm and I knew immediately if he had been drinking when I got off the bus and the "White Album" by The Beatles was blaring from the house. It wasn't often but it was his tell. The man played me "Blackbird" on the guitar most nights to help me sleep when I was a child....and I played it for him through my iPhone when he was dying from kidney disease. My 7 yo son, who has his namesake and was born the year after he died, refuses to go to bed unless I play "Blackbird" through his iPod at night.

(86,515 posts)There was a bluegrass picker's convention down the road, a private affair with about a hundred musician glomming all three floors of a small hotel building, a third of the motel. It was a gas, I don't thing I have ever marathon jammed for 15 hours straight before, I had to chill for a couple days after that. There were some awesome string players all over the place, bass fiddle cases in the halls, if a room door was open, there was an impromptu group jamming and anyone was welcome to play or sing along. I met a lot of new contacts, I'm new in the area so it was a great place to fond kindred spirits (I'll do most genre with a couple exceptions) and there were plenty there. A lot of them play a lot of other stuff besides bluegrass, but you have to be a picker to be good at that unless you are a real good singer.
So that was my recent escape, I suspect I'll need more after a couple weeks.
