Playing with Jeff Beck when she was 17.
What I really like is her joy in playing.
Every song, she's digging it with a smile on her face.
She's terrific.

He, like Larry Graham, learned to pop the string to create percussion in his church band.
There were times they didn't have a drummer so he started to really pop the downbeat to give more rhythm.
Necessity is...

one afternoon in the studio - It's stunning, and he just put it down off the top of his head while he listened to the vocal mix

He internalized the Motown feel. That house band was a group of killers.
Much of Motown's greatest work had single take backing tracks.
Ready, go, 3 minutes, that's a wrap! Takes real pros to do that.

This is their last hurrah with John

Waymon Tisdale passed away too young but he was one of my very favorite jazz bassists (Jaco Pastorius was already mentioned)

The bassist for Faith No More has laid down some awesome bass tracks. Underwater Love and Crack Hitler are good example.

Edited to add:

A Word from Chuck...

“My professional career as a musician has been through and overcame the trials and tribulations attributed to playing an instrument that has finally come into its own and has become a normal and accepted voice in the evolution of today’s music scene.

Since 1959, the sound and power of the electric bass and those who play it has been the support voice and backbone in the success of today’s commercial music.

The bass player in recorded and live music is like the supporting actor of a successful film that gives and projects the glamour and fame in spotlighting the lead actor to the public, or in another scenario, the pitch calling of the catcher on a baseball team that wins the game, but the pitcher is given the credit.

I am always amazed when I see and hear artists who are receiving an award for a recording performance or interviewed for their success, thank everyone but the musicians for their success – especially the bass player and the music arranger.

The bass line/part is the one element in music that causes the listener to feel and hear the lyric, dance and above all enables the lead instrument to function.”

In no particular order...

Greg Ridley (actually probably my favorite bass player) Humble Pie /Spooky tooth/Tea

Ronnie Lane Small Faces/Faces/Solo

Andy Frasier Free/Solo

Crazy that these three bands are some of my greatest vocal influences and they have three of my favorite bass players... I guess it's possible that my love for the vocals influenced my take on the bass players but, I don't think that's it.
